PORT ANGELES —Recreational shrimpers will get an opportunity to take home more spot shrimp in the Strait of Juan de Fuca beginning Thursday, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced.
The daily shrimp limit in Marine Area 6 (East Strait of Juan de Fuca, excluding the Discovery Bay Shrimp District) will move to 120 spot shrimp per person beginning Thursday from the current daily limit of 80 spot shrimp.
Marine Area 6 has been open for 14 days of recreational harvest, and Fish and Wildlife is seeking to enhance harvest opportunity as the fishery shifts to a weekly Thursday through Saturday opening, also starting Thursday.
Marine Area 6 — excluding the Discovery Bay Shrimp District — is the only region with an increased daily limit. The daily spot shrimp limit remains 80 shrimp per person per day in all other marine areas open for spot shrimp fishing.
There are many fishing dates still on the calendar in a number of Puget Sound Marine Areas, and WDFW encourages harvesters to check the state’s recreational shrimp website for specifics at wdfw.wa.gov or call the WDFW shellfish hotline at 1-866-880-5431.
Lingcod closed
SEKIU — A reminder for halibut anglers that lingcod retention has ended in the inland waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound.
Halibut is scheduled to be open today and every other day through the end of June, but lingcod retention ended Monday throughout North Olympic Peninsula marine areas.
Without this rule reminder, anglers might interpret the rule as allowing lingcod retention on days when halibut is open.
Charity tourney
SEQUIM — Registration is underway for the second annual Captain Joseph House Charity Golf Tournament set Saturday, June 27, at Cedars at Dungeness golf course.
Proceeds benefit the Captain Joseph House Foundation, a Port Angeles respite facility for families of U.S. military members who have died in combat. The project was launched by Port Angeles’ Betsy Schultz to honor her son, Capt. Joseph Schultz, an Army Green Beret who was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 29, 2011.
The scramble format tournament includes up to $25,000 in prizes.
Tee times are available from 9 a.m. to noon, players are asked to not arrive more than 30 minutes before their scheduled tee time.
The cost is $90 per person and includes green fees, range balls and a boxed lunch.

Ludlow Best Ball
PORT LUDLOW — Port Ludlow Golf Course announced its first Men’s Best Ball Tournament the weekend of Aug. 8-9.
Entry fees are $350 per team ($175 per golfer) and includes an Aug. 7 practice round, two tournament rounds, tee prizes and lunch after play.
All players must have an established USGA handicap of no more than 35 strokes.
