AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Seth Johnson is picked as Evergreen 1A boys basketball MVP

FORKS — Forks senior point guard Seth Johnson has been selected as the Evergreen League 1A Boys Basketball MVP in voting by league coaches.

Johnson had regular-season totals of 14.3 points, 6.7 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game and shot 55 percent from the floor for the league-champion Spartans.

He averaged more than 22 points per game in three district playoff contests as well.

Forks senior forward Cort Prose was a first-team All-Evergreen League pick, while senior post Braton Armas was tabbed second-team all league.

Three Spartans were honorable mention selections — senior guard Joseph Reaume, sophomore post Trey Baysinger and sophomore guard Tony Flores.

Forks head coach Rick Gooding and Tenino head coach Joe Chihart were picked as coaches of the year.

Rumble on the Ridge

PORT ANGELES — The Rumble on the Ridge men’s basketball tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7 at Port Angeles High School.

The 12-team tournament has a four-game minimum and a $250 team fee.

The top three teams will receive prizes.

All proceeds go to the Port Angeles High School boys basketball program.

Crippen Tourney

FORKS — The annual Nate Crippen Memorial Basketball Tournament will be held at Forks High School on March 23-24.

The five-on-five tournament offers a three-game guarantee for the first day of play, and tournament play with upper and lower divisions on the second day.

Cost to enter a team is $250.

The top three teams in the upper division and the lower-division champion will receive prizes. Winners-bracket Champions will earn a quarter-zip shirt, runners-up get hoodies and the third-place team will receive long-sleeve T-shirts.

The lower division champs will get T-shirts.

The tournament raises funds for scholarships for graduating Forks High School seniors.

Pickleball champs

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles hosted a three-day pickleball tournament last weekend at Roosevelt Elementary School.

The top three finishers in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Double in three skill brackets received medals.

Women’s gold medalists were Shanna Bo and Christiane Johnson of Sequim in Women’s 3.0; Becky Stuve and Mary Orme of Victoria, B.C. (Women’s 3.5); and Jane Rich and Barb Lawrie of Victoria, B.C. (Women’s 4.0).

Men’s gold medalists are: Jay Bogges and Bill Truckenmiller of Port Angeles (3.0); Robert Knapp and Mike Jeorsz of Sequim (3.5) and David Later and Johnathan Ferrar of Silverdale (4.0).

Mixed doubles champions are: Bill Averill and Mandy Rankin of Port Angeles (3.0); Vebol Bo and Shauna Bo of Sequim (3.5) and Andy Daniels and Barb Lawrie of Victoria, B.C. (4.0).

The event attracted pickleball players from around Western Washington and one team from South Africa.

PA Wrestling Club

Registration and practices begin March 11 for the Port Angeles Wrestling Club freestyle season.

Practices will be held twice a week from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete in optional weekend tournaments. The season ends May 4.

The cost is $70 per wrestler. For wrestlers who participated in the Folkstyle season, the cost will be $30. Discounts are available for families with three or more participants and scholarships are available.

Youth wrestling

TACOMA — The Port Angeles Wrestling team had several top placers at the Washington State Championships held at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 17, the club’s strongest showing ever at state.

The team is led by first-year coach Dylan Snavely and assistant JR Flores.

Finishing second were Bradon Gray at the 6-and-under 37-39-pound division and Phoenix Flores in the 12U novice, 86-pound division.

Other placers include:

Giovanni Hafners, fourth, 12U novice 135-pound division.

Cannon Frees, sixth, 8U bantam 62-pound.

Leighton Flores, sixth, 8U bantam, 43-pound division.

Ethan Abrams, seventh, 14U schoolboy, 90-pound division.

Grant Lancaster, eighth, 8U bantam, 45-pound division.

Kyler Williams, eighth, 8U bantam, 49-pound division.
