SEATTLE — Sequim’s Hannah Bates and Jelissa Julmist played this weekend in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association girls all-state game for the 2A squad.
The 1A team beat the 2A team 78-71.
Julmist in particular had a solid game, scoring 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Normally a post player, she made a pair of 3-pointers. She also had five rebounds.
Bates had four points and hit a 3-pointer. She also had four rebounds.
Julmist and Bates helped lead the Sequim Wolves to a 14-0 record in Olympic League play and the team’s first uncontested league championship since 1987. They also led the team to a fourth-place finish at the 2A state tournament earlier this month, the team’s highest finish at state ever.
Julmist and Bates have both said they intend to play basketball next year for Peninsula College.
The game was played at King’s High School in Seattle. The 1A and 2A boys and girls played as did the 1B and 2B teams, and the 3A and 4A teams. Only seniors are selected for the teams and Bates and Julmist were the only Olympic Peninsula seniors chosen.
NWAC finals
PASCO — Lane College, which had to go to overtime to beat Peninsula College in the semifinals, won the women’s Northwest Athletic Conference championship Sunday.
Lane beat Green River handily 72-52. On Saturday, Lane barely got by the Pirates 92-90 with a game-winning shot with two seconds left in overtime. The Pirates played much of the fourth quarter and overtime without their top scorer Itaua Tuisaula, who injured her ankle and had to leave the game. Several other Pirates players finished the game with injuries. Lane finished the season with a 32-1 record.
Meanwhile, the NWAC men’s championship was an all-North Region affair. Bellevue beat Everett 85-71 in the title game. The Peninsula College men won the North Championship over both of these teams, but the men were also hit by the injury bug, losing one of their top starters, Malik Jackson, to a dislocated ankle near the end of the season.
Without Jackson, the men lost in the first round of the NWAC tournament, 77-73 to Columbia Basin, which was essentially playing a home game in Pasco. Columbia Basin ended up making the NWAC Final Four, losing 75-70 to Bellevue on Saturday.
Peninsula won the North Region with a 12-2 record while Bellevue and Everett finished tied for second with identical 9-5 records.
The Pirates went 3-1 against Bellevue and Everett in the regular season.
