Sequim’s Barry earns GNAC honor

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Sequim High School graduate and Western Washington University javelin thrower was selected as the Male Freshman of the Year by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference when the conference’s track and field end-of-season awards were announced last week.

Barry, who graduated from Sequim in 2015, placed fourth in the javelin at the GNAC Championships and 14th at the NCAA Division II Championships. His season-best throw of 201 feet, 8 inches at the Ralph Vernacchia Track and Field meet is seventh-best in school history and 19th-best in GNAC history.

Gymnasts compete

VICTORIA, B.C. — Twelve gymnasts represented Klahhane Gymnastics at the Garden City Invitational hosted by Falcon Gymnastics last month.

Cindy Liang took first all-around with a score of 37.250 in the Level 4 11-year-old age group. Liang also picked up gold medals on uneven bars (9.45) and floor exercise (9.525) and silver medals on vault (9.10) and balance beam (9.175).

Dylan Baermann was fourth all-around (35.35) in the 10-year-old age group, taking a silver medal on uneven bars (8.85), fifth on balance beam (9.05) and seventh on floor (9.10).

In Level 6, Kori Miller picked up a silver medal on uneven bars (9.25) and finished fourth all-around (35.35) in the 11-year-old age group. Morgan Mattix was fifth on uneven bars with 8.75.

In the 14 and over age group, Danica Miller picked up the bronze on uneven bars (8.725) and finished fourth in the floor exercise (8.975). She took sixth all-around (34.85). Kianna Miller took the bronze on floor exercise (9.075) and fifth on vault (8.975) to finish sixth all-around (34.625).

Cassii Middlestead, competing in the Level 7 14 and over age group, took the silver medal on balance beam (9.40) and finished eighth all-around (34.025).

Piper Allen placed fourth on balance beam (8.95) and finished sixth all-around (36.025) in the Level 3 10-11 age group.

Members of the Xcel Team competing in the Performance Plus category received gold, silver and bronze performance ribbons.

Lainy Vig, competing in the 11-year-old age group, was one of only three girls to receive four golds.

Julienne Jacobs earned gold on floor and silver on vault, bars and beam; Aiesha Mathis won gold on vault, silver on beam and floor and bronze on bars; Adisyn Ellis-Bourm claimed two silvers and two bronzes; and Isabelle Pecorarro took four bronze awards.
