Sequim teen equestrian third in region
REDMOND, Ore. — Grace Niemeyer, a member of the Sequim equestrian team, finished third in the “Hunt Seat Over Fences” jumping competition at the Pacific Northwest Invitational championship meet held in Redmond, Ore., this weekend.
The PNWIC is a regional finals of the top five teams and individuals from each event from Washington and Oregon high school championships. Niemeyer finished fifth in Washington at the state meet held May 16-19 in Moses Lake.
Long wins state decathlon
SHORELINE — Port Angeles’ Millie Long not only won the state girls’ decathlon meet, she shattered Port Angeles High School points record.
Long, competing against Summer Sanden of Marysville-Pilchuck and Audrey Knutson of Burlington-Edison, won five out of the 10 events. She won the 100-meter run with a time of 13.40 seconds, a personal record, the 400-meter run with a time of 1:03.5, the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:31.3 and her specialty, the 100-meter hurdles in 16.45 seconds.
Long also won the high jump with a personal-record leap of 1.56 meters (5 feet, 2 inches).
Long scored 5,180 points in the event, besting Sanden’s 4,626. The previous PAHS girls’ record was 4,312, set by Dani Weatherbee in 2007. Long’s decathlon points total was also the fifth-highest in Washington state high school history for girls.
Long recently won the state 2A track and field championship in the 300-meter hurdles.
In addition to winning five events, Long finished second in the shot put with a distance of 8.23 meters (27 feet) and the javelin with a distance of 25.84 meters (84 feet, 9 inches). Long was second in the long jump with a distance of 5.07 meters (16 feet, 7½ inches).
Big Hurt price jumps July 1
PORT ANGELES — The cost to register for the Big Hurt endurance race will go up after July 1.
To save money, people can register now at https:// bighurtpa.com/registration/. The cost is $120 for tandem teams and high school teams. After July 1, the cost goes up to $125. The current Iron Division price is $90 and goes up to $95 on July 1.
The three- or four-person team that is now $240 goes up to $260 on July 1.
The Big Hurt is a four-part race that takes place Sept. 28 on the Olympic Peninsula.
Competitors begin on mountain bikes and ride 16.5 miles on logging roads, single-track trails and pavement from the foothills above Port Angeles down to Waterfront Park in downtown. From the beach, competitors kayak three miles through Port Angeles Harbor, then embark on a 30-mile road bike journey west of the city. They complete the race with a 10-mile run back into the city along the Olympic Discovery Trail.
People can register to race as an individual, or as part of two-person, three-person or four-person teams.
