Youth rowers brave waves at lake regatta
LAKE STEVENS — Fourteen Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association rowers competed in a steady cross wind and heavy chop at the Lake Stevens Spring Invitational Regatta last weekend.
Twenty-eight crews from all over Washington, Oregon, California and British Columbia attended this event.
The prevailing high winds caused officials to shorten the standard 2,000 meter race length to just 650 meters.
Maria England and Emily Sirguy posted the best showing, winning the Novice 2X event.
Veronica Kennedy and Claire Tyson were fourth, missing out on third by less than a second.
The Women’s 4x team Angelica Kennedy, Lisa Callahan, Ella Ventura and Maria England finished fourth, a strong showing as an all novice first-year crew competing against older, more experienced teams.
The Junior Boys did well in all events. The Boys 4X with Nathan Mishler, Daniel Weaver, Tyler Turner and Aiden Feingold ended up third, while the Boys Novice 2X (Jake McGovern and Vince Pavlak) were second.
The Boys Varsity 2X, with Daniel Weaver and Nathan Mishler, rowed soundly into a third-place finish.
“I am very impressed by this team’s potential and look forward to their continued improvement and success,” coach Deb Swinford said.
On Sunday, Sean Halberg, one of the group’s sdult master rowers competed, placing second in his event.
Rowers will compete at the Covered Bridge Regatta in Eugene, Ore., in preparation for the Northwest Regionals in Vancouver, Wash. in May.

Join senior softball
SEQUIM — Sequim’s senior softball Grey Wolves are seeking players of all skill levels for its coed league.
Registration is open until May 1.
Up to 50 members of the league gather each Tuesday and Thursday at Carrie Blake Park.
Warmup begins at 8:30 a.m., batting practice follows at 9 a.m. and games begin from 9:45 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Age requirements are 50 and older for men and 45 and older for women. Players’ ages currently vary from the mid 50s into the high 70s.
The group’s primary rules are to have fun and play safe.

Athletes’ Choice wins
In the first game of the Olympic Junior Babe Ruth season Athletes’ Choice knocked off Sequim Co-op 9-3 in a game called by darkness.
Athlete’s Choice was helped by great pitching performances by Tanner Walker, Wyatt Hall and Sean Hanrahan.
Hall, Hanrahan and Gunnar Volkmann also had hits in the win.
Sequim Co-op stretched out three runs on four hits in the loss.
