Riders named all-league in baseball
PORT ANGELES — Three Port Angeles baseball players were named to the Olympic League North Division All-League team.
Roughriders senior catcher Jake Felton, senior pitcher Adam Watkins and senior third baseman Seth Woods were tapped in voting by league coaches.
Bainbridge junior pitcher JR Ritchie, a UCLA commit, was named MVP.
Peninsula women’s soccer beats Skagit
MOUNT VERNON — The Peninsula women had a tough road win Thursday, having to rally with three goals in the second half to beat Skagit Valley 3-1.
The Pirates entered the half tied 0-0 with the Cardinals, but struck quickly in the second half. Cecilia Jenkins scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute and Alysia Alvarado added an unassisted goal in the 59th minute.
Former Port Angeles Roughrider Kyrsten McGuffey added a goal in the 65th minute, with an assist going to Miya Clarke.
The Pirates gave up a goal to Skagit in the 90th minute. It was the Pirates’ first score allowed all season as the goal snapped a 540-minute scoreless streak.
Peninsula finished with 15 shots to Skagit Valley’s nine, and five shots on goal to Skagit Valley’s three.
Peninsula (6-0-0) next plays at home at 2 p.m. Monday against Edmonds (1-4-2). Edmonds has Gabby Happe of Sequim and Lucah Folden of Port Angeles on its roster. The Peninsula men will play at 4 p.m.
Pirates men split pair in basketball
MOUNT VERNON — The Peninsula College men’s basketball team split a pair of contests this week, blowing out Edmonds 89-55 and falling 75-63 on the road at first-place Skagit Valley.
Ty Artis led the Pirates with 22 points, six rebounds and two steals in Friday’s game against the Cardinals.
Peninsula struggled from beyond the 3-point line, hitting 3 of 14 shots while Skagit Valley knocked down 8 of 17.
The Cardinals also took advantage of a disparity at the foul line, hitting 23 of 36 while the Pirates sank 10 of 15 shots.
Isaiah Sampson led Peninsula (8-4) with 13 points and seven rebounds in the win over Edmonds.
Jaylin Reed came off the bench to score 12 and Mikey Medlock added 10 for the Pirates.
Peninsula’s next two games against Bellevue are postponed due to COVID protocol for the Bulldogs. The Pirates are next set to play at home against Skagit Valley on Saturday.
Peninsula women win big in hoops
BREMERTON — Tasiah Little led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds as the Peninsula College women’s basketball team pushed to a 63-30 win over Olympic this week.
Tayvia Cabatbat added 10, Tatianna Kamae scored 10 and Keeli-Jade Smith added 10 off the bench for the Pirates.
Sequim’s Hope Glasser added eight rebounds for Peninsula (3-3).
Former Port Townsend player Jasmani Apker scored seven points in 24 minutes for the Rangers.
The Pirates host Skagit Valley in a makeup game Monday night.
