Rhody Open golf tournaments start Saturday in PT
PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Golf Club will host the 2023 annual Rhody Open golf tournaments, also known as the Jim Caldwell Memorial Golf Classic, beginning Saturday.
Proceeds support the Rhododendron Festival Scholarship Fund.
All events will start at 9 a.m.
Saturday’s play is an 18-hole individual competition.
A two-person nine-hole scramble will be held May 20, leaving enough time to attend the Rhododenron Festival Grand Parade.
A two-person best ball 18-hole tournament will be held May 21.

Athlete of the Week
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles junior track and field athlete Parker Nickerson has been selected as a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Athlete of the Week.
Nickerson earned top scoring athlete at the Olympic League Track and Field Championships on May 6, earning a total of 30 points.
This included first-place in long-jump with a personal record jump of 20-feet, 8-inches, first-place in the triple jump (40-9.25), fifth-place in the 110-meter hurdles (18.13 seconds) and third-place in the 300 hurdles (43.03).
Nickerson holds a 3.324 GPA and is a team captain where is he can be found helping his teammates at all times during workouts or with individual events.
He’ll receive a $25 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card, an achievement certificate and a letter of recognition from the WIAA.
Shearer holes out
SEQUIM — Sequim’s Jordan Shearer recorded his first career hole-in-one while golfing at The Cedars at Dungeness on May 9.
Shearer aced the par-3 11th hole from 117 yards, using a 7-iron and a Bridgestone e6 golf ball.
The shot was witnessed by Ashlee Simmons of Port Angeles and Tyler Forshaw and Trever Benjamin of Sequim
Rhody Run May 21
PORT TOWNSEND — The 2023 Jefferson Healthcare Rhody Run returns May 21 with 5K and 10K options.
The race will start and finish at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, going along the edge of Fort Worden State Park and up the Cherry Street and Hastings Avenue hills in Port Townsend.
All proceeds from the race go to support school sports programs and youth-oriented nonprofits in the area.
