AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Townsend-Sequim football game canceled; Pirates game free Tuesday

PORT TOWNSEND — The season-opening game between Port Townsend and Sequim scheduled for Friday night has been canceled because Port Townsend will not have enough players eligible to field a team.

Sequim Athletic Director Dave Ditlefsen said Sequim was hoping to schedule another opponent for Friday, but at this time, it appears the Wolves will not be able to find another team to play.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” said Port Townsend Head Coach Alex Heilig. “We ran into eligibility issues.”

He said players have to have a minimum of 12 practices in order to play and not enough players were eligible for that number of practices.

Heilig said it’s unlikely the game will be rescheduled. The Redhawks do not have any off weeks in their schedule.

Heilig expects that the Redhawks will have enough players able to dress for their Sept. 8 game at Port Angeles.

Heilig said it’s a shame since Sequim is such a good nearby rival.

“You never want to do this, especially after last year’s game [won by Sequim 27-26] was so good. It was going to be a great game.”

Pirates game free

PORT ANGELES — Today’s matchup between the Peninsula soccer women and Tacoma at Sigmar Field will be free to the public.

The match begins early at 11 a.m. It’s a nonleague affair, but will count toward the women’s overall standings and statistics.

The women enter the undefeated (2-0) in nonleague games. They are the defending Northwest Conference champions.
