AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles wins gym meet, hoops shoot Saturday

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Gymnastics team won its Port Angeles Quad Meet on Monday.

Port Angeles had 153.05 points to beat North Thurston (141.25), Kingston (136.80) and North Kitsap (123.50).

Roughrider Cassii Middlestead won the beam, while her teammate Maya Wharton won the floor exercise. Middlestead was second in overall points, while Wharton was third.

Sweet sixth

OTHELLO — Port Angeles wrestler Alyssa Sweet finished sixth in her 32-girl bracket at the Othello Lady Husky Invitational.

The Port Angeles girls’ wrestling team finished 43rd out of 59 schools at the Friday and Saturday meet.

Sweet wrestles at 130 pounds.

Elks Hoop Shoot Saturday

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Elks Club will host this year’s youth Hoop Shoot at Stevens Middle School on Saturday.

Boys and girls ages 8 to 13 from Port Angeles and Joyce are welcome. Eligibility is determined by the contestant’s age on April 1, 2017.

Eight and 9-year olds will shoot at 9 a.m.

Contestants will shoot from four feet in front of the regulation free-throw line and use a regulation-size women’s basketball.

Ten and 11-year-olds will shoot at 10:30 a.m. and 12- and 13-year-olds will shoot at noon.

The top shooter in each category will be invited to participate at the district competition in Sequim on Jan. 28. Winners can advance to state, regional and the national championship in Chicago.

All contestants will receive a certificate of participation and the top three in each age category will receive certificates of achievement and trophies.

SkyRidge sets tourney

SEQUIM — SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim hosts its Winter Time Open Three-Person Scramble on Saturday. The date was pushed back from its original date of Jan. 14.

The tourney starts at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $90 per team, with a 24-team maximum. Fee includes range balls, two KPs, food and more. Power carts are $12 per seat and option honey pots are $60 per team.

Cedars Polar Bear

SEQUIM — Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim will host the 24th annual Polar Bear Championship golf tournament Jan. 27-29. The tourney features 36-hole individual stroke play with one professional and three amateur divisions.

Cost is $160 per person and pays for three rounds of golf (including a Jan. 27 practice round), range balls on Jan. 28 and 29, tee prize, green fees, dinner on Jan. 28, lunch on Jan. 29 and more. Professionals and amateurs with a USGA index of 27.0 or lower are eligible.
