AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles’ Uvila has great outing in Fall League All-Star Game

Stevens football; Port Angeles youth wrestling registration

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Port Angeles product Cole Uvila, a minor league pitching prospect with the Texas Rangers, excelled in one inning of work during the Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game earlier this month.

Uvila entered the game for the West Fall Stars in the fifth, and in his perfect frame, the 25-year-old right-hander induced a flyout and struck out two, throwing 10 strikes in 13 pitches.

One strikeout came on an absolutely nasty curve to get Angels prospect Jo Adell swinging.

Uvila’s two best curveballs in the matchup had spin rates of 2,965 and 3,379, which is especially impressive considering just 4.6 percent of the curveballs tracked by Statcast during the regular season had spin rates of 3,000-plus rpm.

The MLB average on curves this season was 2,523 rpm and Houston’s Ryan Pressly led all MLB pitchers with 100 curves thrown at 3,305 rpm.
