YMCA to hold golf tournament
SEQUIM — People can enjoy a day out on the golf course and help support youth, teens, and families at the Second Annual Olympic Peninsula YMCA Fore the Kids Golf Tournament on Sept. 21 at Cedars at Dungeness.
Registration is open through Sept. 16 at the pro shop at the Cedars at Dungeness. Call the pro shop at 360-582-4900 or visit the shop to register.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It includes lunch, 18 holes of golf with a cart, course contests, a hole-in-one contest, a tournament shirt and swag bag, raffle prices and more. The entry fee is $100.
All proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Olympic Peninsula YMCA’s Member Support Fund to provide financial assistance to individuals, families and children in need. For more information, go to www.olympicpeninsulaymca.org/golftournament.
Snipe wins nine golds
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles retired teacher Ron Snipe earned nine gold medals in the 75-79 age group at the State Games of America in Lynchburg, Va., on August 3-4.
Snipe won the 100-meter backstroke, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay in the long course (a 50-meter pool) at Liberty University and the 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 200 medley relay, and 200 freestyle relay in the short course (a 25-yard pool).
Snipe has now earned 30 national titles since 2009 in various State Games of America swimming events. The State Games of America are held every two years with the next one in Ames, Iowa, in 2021.
Corvallis wins WCL
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Corvallis Knights are once again the champions of the West Coast League after beating the Victoria HarbourCats 11-1 Sunday night at Goss Stadium, clinching the team’s fourth straight title.
Corvallis is the first team in WCL history to achieve a four-peat. The title is the seventh overall for the Knights, as Corvallis has captured WCL crowns in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Victoria beat Corvallis on Saturday night to force the deciding Game 3 of the championship series. Corvallis won Game 1 in Victoria 14-8.
Corvallis went 42-12 in the regular season and at one point had an 18-game winning streak.
Big Hurt party
PORT ANGELES — The Big Hurt this year will have extended festivities.
The race takes place on Sept. 28 in and around Port Angeles. The race is a four-leg test of endurance with a 16.5-mile-long mountain bike race down logging roads and trails in the hills above Port Angeles. In downtown Port Angeles, racers switch to kayaks for a 3-mile race in the Port Angeles inner harbor, then go on a 30-mile road bicycle race west of the city. The race finally ends with a 10-kilometer run along the Olympic Discovery Trails. Participants 15 years and old can race solo or as part of a relay team.
Because the mountain bike race start is in a remote area, team members and spectators can watch the start line by
live feed from the Platypus Pavilion at the park at 10 a.m. There will be a continuing live feed from various points along the race course throughout the day. Zaya Marimba will play from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
New for 2019 is the addition of a post-race party that will extend the fun and camaraderie. Sponsors and local organizations have stepped up to enhance this after-race experience. The Lower Elwha Casino will provide a free salmon bake dinner for all racers and volunteers and there will be a beer garden from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. with brews from the Barhop Taproom and the Finnriver Cidery.
Race awards will be given to the top three finishers in each category and division at 4 p.m., followed by live music from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. by local guitar and violin duo, Scott Sullivan and Chandra Johnson of Crushwater.
Spectators are welcome to attend to cheer on racers as they pass through the transition zone and finish line throughout the day and to enjoy the evening festivities. There will be food and beer for purchase by the public as well.
Racers should sign up by Sept. 12 if they want to receive a Big Hurt t-shirt. There is a price increase on Sept. 1.
