Lunt, Wheeler starring for Lower Columbia
LONGVIEW — Former Port Angeles Roughriders battery mates Nizhoni Wheeler and Lauren Lunt have reunited on the Lower Columbia Red Devils softball team.
The pair played big roles as Lower Columbia swept a doubleheader against archrival Centralia with 9-6 and 15-10 victories Friday to vault past the Blazers into second place in the Northwest Athletic Conference’s South Division.
Lunt went a combined 7 for 9 at the plate in the two contests, slugging a home run and three doubles while driving in six runs and scoring four runs.
Lunt is hitting .500 so far this season, good for 10th in the NWAC, often serving as the designated player (batting for the pitchers) while she recovers from an elbow stinger. She’s also seen time at catcher and first base. Lunt has totaled four home runs, eight doubles and 22 RBIs and is tied for the team-high in slugging percentage of .786.
Wheeler, who also played basketball for a Red Devils women’s basketball team that reached the NWAC quarterfinals, picked up the save in both games.
Roller derby bout
SEQUIM — Port Scandalous Roller Derby will host a bout with the Dockyard Derby Dames of Tacoma on Saturday at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.
The bout will begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for military members, seniors and youth ages 7-12.
Ages 6 and under are admitted free.
The event features a beer garden for ages 21 and older and a 50-50 raffle will be held.

Race for clean water
SEQUIM — Sequim Valley Church of the Nazarene will host the World Vision Global 6K on Saturday, May 4.
The distance is significant. Six kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles) is the average distance people walk to get water for their families and homes in the developing world.
Every $50 registration fee will be used to dig new wells, build hand washing stations, improve water infrastructure and pipelines and provide maintenance training.
The event will begin at 10 a.m.

Participants will receive a T-shirt, race bib with photo of a sponsored child and a medal in the mail.
Runners and walkers will check-in and be bused to the trail nearby. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, cold water and soda following the race.
Girls Softball
Olympic 7, Sequim 3
SEQUIM — The Olympic softball team scored four runs in the seventh inning to get past Sequim 7-3 this weekend.
Olympic’s Vanisa Ivie hit two home runs and two errors by Sequim in the seventh inning helped open up the floodgates.
Isabelle Dennis had a solo home run and scored two runs for Sequim. Latisha Robideau, LeeAnn Raney and Christy Grubb had hits for the Wolves, with Grubb also driving in a run. Lily Fili also had a hit and an RBI.
Raney took the loss on the mound, but struck out eight batters.
Sequim (3-2, 5-3) remains just one game out of first place with Port Angeles, Olympic and North Kitsap all tied for first at 4-1. The Wolves played North Kitsap (4-1, 6-3) on Monday and will next play at North Mason (2-3, 4-6) on Wednesday.
12U softball
PORT ANGELES — In 12U softball action this weekend, Boulevard Wellness beat Port Angeles Power 13-11. Audrey Gales was 1 for 3 for Boulevard.
GOAT run registration
PORT ANGELES — Registration is also open for the 2019 GOAT run that will be held September 7.
The 50K, marathon and half-marathon courses will be held on a combination of single-track trails and unpaved forest roads.
Both the marathon and 50K races include more than 21 miles of single-track trails. The race will finish at Lake Crescent.
Spaces are limited to 100 runners per distance, with two waves for the half-marathon.
Food and drink will be provided at the Log Cabin Resort, which is also a great place to spend the night during the race. For more information or to register, go to www.greatoatrun.com.
Big Hurt registration
PORT ANGELES — Registration is now open for the 2019 Big Hurt that will be held September 28.
The Big Hurt is a four-stage race that combines mountain biking, kayaking, road cycling and running in and around Port Angeles.
Categories include solo Iron Division (men, women and age 50-plus masters) and relay teams, which include divisions of high school, tandems, regular relays and masters (50-plus).
