ELLENSBURG — Former Port Angeles High School standout Kiah Jones was named Central Washington University Student of the Year by Central President James Gaudino, and was one of four Wildcat athletes named CWU Top Cats by the school.
Jones wrapped her volleyball career at Central with a total of 722 kills, 330 digs and 149 blocks.
She is a three-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference honorable mention award winner and a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team member. Jones was a five-year Faculty Athletic Representative Scholar Athlete award winner and a three-year All Conference Academic team member.
The CWU volleyball team awarded her the most improved player in 2013 and 2014 and the Most Inspirational player in 2015 and 2016.
Jones graduated June 10 with a bachelor of science degree in cellular and molecular biology and a minor in anthropology, with a 3.94 GPA.
Jones will be a member of the inaugural class to attend Washington State University’s new Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine in Spokane this fall.
Jones is the daughter of Scott and Sherri Jones of Port Angeles.
Sinnes moves up
AUBURN — Matt Sinnes, a 2003 graduate of Port Angeles High School, has taken the reins of the Class 4A Auburn-Mountainview boys basketball program after three seasons coaching girls hoops at Class 2A Fife.
Sinnes led the Trojans to a 43-29 record and three district playoff appearances in his time in Fife and was picked as the Class 2A South Puget Sound League Coach of the Year in 2014-2015.
He formerly spent three seasons as a varsity assistant at Graham-Kapowsin and Puyallup.
Sinnes inherits a program that went 6-14 in 2016-2017, tied for last in the 4A South Puget Sound League’s Olympic Division.
He is the son of former Port Angeles boys head coach Lee Sinnes, a member of the state Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, and Sandy Sinnes.
State 1B volleyball
RENTON — The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has moved the State 1B and 2B tournaments to Thursday and Friday Nov. 9 and 10 to accommodate Saturday Sabbath.
The move was made upon recommendation from WIAA counsel. A number of private, religious 1B and 2B schools observe Sabbath from sundown Friday through Saturday. In the Sea-Tac 1B League (of which Quilcene is a member), there are three schools that observe Sabbath on Saturday — Auburn Adventist, Puget Sound Adventist and Northwest Yeshiva.
The 1B and 2B tournament will remain at the Yakima Valley SunDome. The state 1A tournament will remain Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11 and will be played at either the SunDome or at Pierce College in Puyallup.
