PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Hall of Fame selection committee has started to develop a list of candidates for the 2019 Hall of Fame induction class.
The public is encouraged to submit nominees for the second class if the hall of fame by July 31.
“We have begun to develop a list of highly qualified individuals, which includes former players, coaches, administrators and supporters,” said Hall of Fame Chairman Bruce Skinner. “We ask the public’s help in making sure that the list is complete and includes the names of every eligible individual.”
Skinner said that they are looking for persons that have achieved at the “All-state” or “Placed in State” level. “We are looking for nominees who did more than make ‘All League,’ ” he said.
Seventeen Port Angeles High School Hall of Famers were selected for the inaugural class, and were recognized and formally inducted at a dinner April 21.
The brainchild of Port Angeles High School Director of Athletics Dwayne Johnson, the 35-member Hall of Fame Committee was formed last spring after Johnson brought the proposal to local Roughrider supporters. The committee researched athletes in every class since 1910, initially compiling a list of 130 candidates.
“It was a difficult task narrowing the field down to the final 17 – we had to play catch up over a 107 year period,” said committee chair Bruce Skinner. “There are many other equally deserving graduates that will be inducted in future years.
The inductees were, in alphabetical order were Kelli Antolock, golf, 1980; Tyna Barinaga, badminton, 1964; Mike Briggs, football, 1960; Scooter Chapman, media, 1952; Mike Clayton, basketball, 1966; Sherri Felton, track and basketball, 1977; Bernie Fryer, football and basketball, 1968; Ken Fuhrer, basketball, 1952; Penny Graves, track, 1984; Scott Jones and Jim Michalczik, football, 1984; Leigh Morgan basketball, 1986; Jeff Ridgway, baseball, 1999; Art Sandison, track, 1966; Lee Sinnes, basketball, 1966; Joel Thomas, football, 1993; and Henry Wyborney, track, 1958.

OPTC results
PORT ANGELES — Members of the Olympic Peninsula Track Club competed in the Xstream Speed Twilight meet at Kent Meridian High School on Saturday with eight new personal bests.
In the team scored event, OPTC tied for second in the 13-14 age category and came in sixth in the 15-16 age group out of 25 teams.
Bailee Larson had a personal record in each of the four events she entered She came in second in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 23.77 seconds, second in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 6 inches, third in the long jump with a leap of 14-2½, and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.09.
Jayde Gedelman threw the javelin a personal best 86-2 for second place. She finished fourth in the high jump at 3-10. Eve Burke finished second in the long jump with a distance of 15-6, while was fourth in the high jump at 4-8.
Taryn Johnson in the 11-12 age group had her best ever mark in the 200 meters with a time of 33.76. She finished the 400 meters in 1:14.13 and jumped 10-9 in the long jump.
Birdie Pyeatt in the 9-10 age group had a personal-record in the 400 meters with a time of 1:22.17 for seventh. She ran 36.24 in the 200 meters. Riley Pyeatt competed in the 15-16 age group and won the long jump with a personal-record 15-7 ½. Ashton Gedelman ran 1:32.39 in the 400 meters, also a personal best.
