AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles baseball time, location for state tournament updated

OLYMPIA — There have been a couple of updates and changes in Port Angeles baseball’s schedule for the state 2A tournament.

Port Angeles will play its first game at state at 10 a.m. Saturday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis. If the Roughriders win, they will play a second game, also at W.F. West, against the winner of Hudson’s Bay and White River, late Saturday afternoon.

The Riders qualified for the state tournament with a 5-4 walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning in the bi-district tournament Saturday against Olympic. A Josiah Gooding single drove Kole Acker in to score from second base.

The Riders (15-6-1) finished fifth at district and are a No. 14 seed at state. W.F. West (18-5) is a No. 3 seed and is No. 3 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index. Port Angeles is No. 13 in RPI.

The game should be available to watch on video on the Gamechanger phone app.

Jr. Babe Ruth results

PORT ANGELES — Athletes’ Choice continues to have a good start to the Olympic Junior Babe Ruth season.

Athletes’ Choice has won their first seven games. Andre Campbell had a great game on the mound last week, throwing 41 pitches in a five-inning shutout.

Athletes’ Choice has put together team wins with their first-string pitcher unavailable to play due to Port Angeles High School district playoffs.

Athletes’ Choice played again Monday against Local 155.

Discovery Bay women

DISCOVERY BAY — Discovery Bay women played the annual Beat the Pro Event. Course pro Jeff Kent was challenged by 12 members of the women’s club. Club members competed with their net scores against the pro’s gross score.

Kent rotated with four groups of women for four to six holes of competition for the 18-hole round. A beautiful day at Discovery Bay was even more spectacular for Jodi Stone, whose net score of 67 beat Kent’s gross score of 77.

Tied for second with gross scores of 79 were Barb Aldrich and Cindy Breed. Fourth-place net went to Terry Graham with 82. Graham also took the prize for low putts with 34.

Port Townsend Ladies Club is in full swing this season. The women play nine holes each Tuesday, teeing off at 10 a.m. Play is often followed by lunch at the clubhouse restaurant.

Blind Draw was the game of the week. Each player plays her own game and then makes a “blind” draw for a partner to total an 18-hole round. Winners with a lucky draw were Aldrich and Lynn Bidlake with a net score of 80. Katherine Buchanan and Starla Audette placed second with scores of 81. Women are welcome to join the club. People can call the clubhouse at 360-385-4547 for details.
