AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles baseball makes state tourney, Sequim falls; additional halibut date added

Roughriders win, Sequim falls in playoffs

TACOMA — Port Angeles edged Washington 2-1 in a Class 2A West Central District Tournament baseball game Saturday at Franklin Pierce High School to clinch a repeat trip to the state regional round.

The Roughiders (14-7) played Olympic League foe Olympic for seeding purposes late Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sequim suffered a season-ending loss to Trojans in a 3-1 contest.

The Wolves gave up all three runs on four hits and a pair of errors in the top of the third inning.

Sequim loaded the bases and scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and three hit batters, but Olympic ace Chase Matheny was able to get the Wolves to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Sequim couldn’t manage anything in its final at-bats and finished the season with a 14-7 record.

Detailed results for all three games will appear in Monday’s Peninsula Daily News.

Halibut date added

PORT ANGELES — An additional day of halibut fishing, Sunday, May 21, has been approved by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Halibut fishing will be open off the coast in Marine Area 3 (La Push) and 4 (Neah Bay) and along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound (areas 5-10).

Sufficient quota remains to open the recreational halibut fishery for another day in these marine areas. Catch data will be evaluated following the opening on May 21 to determine if enough quota remains for additional fishing days.

Those days are tentatively scheduled for May 25, June 1 and June 4.

The recreational halibut fishery remains open in Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco) Thursdays through Sundays at all depths and Mondays through Wednesdays in the nearshore area.
