AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles baseball hangs tough with 4A school

DES MOINES — Port Angeles hung tough with 4A Mount Rainier on the road, but six late runs were the difference in an 8-2 loss.

“This was a great test for us. Mount Rainier is a 4A school with good depth at every position and it was an opportunity for us to try to dig one out on the road against a quality opponent,” said coach Karl Myers.

Port Angeles had the game tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, but Mount Rainier erupted for two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to blow the game open.

Tyrus Beckett hit a home run and narrowly missed a second home run by a few feet, according to Myers. Luke Angevine also hit a triple to deep center.

“On the whole, we needed to be a bit more aggressive at the plate, string a few hits together and execute when we have opportunities to move guys over and put the game in motion. It was one of those games that you’ve got to tip your cap to the other team,” Myers said. “This was a great learning experience for our kids and as we progress it will hopefully better prepare us to win some games on the road in the coming weeks.”

Mount Rainier first baseman Jake Biggs hit three home runs in the game.

Port Angeles (3-2, 5-4) is just one game out of first place in the Olympic League 2A Division. The Roughriders next play a league game at home at 4:15 p.m. Monday (at Volunteer Field instead of Civic Field) against 2-2 Kingston.
