Pitch, hit and run contest next Saturday
PORT ANGELES — Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit & Run competition for youth baseball and softball players will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lincoln Park diamonds.
Boys and girls ages 7 through 14 as of July 17, are eligible to participate in the free event.
Contestants in four age groups will get six tries to throw a strike from 35 feet for the softball division and from 45 feet for the baseball division during the Pitch portion of the event.
Hit will test a competitor’s ability to hit from a stationary batting tee, along a tape measure from home plate, toward straight-away centerfield. Hits will be measured for distance and accuracy.
The Run portion will see each child run 120 feet on the base paths (from second base to home plate).
Winners will advance to a sectional competition from there to compete at the Seattle Mariners’ T-Mobile Park. National finalists will receive a free trip to the MLB All-Star Week and shag balls during the home run derby.

Swain’s walk-off
PORT ANGELES — Swain’s earned a 7-6 walk-off victory over First Federal in Olympic Junior Babe Ruth action Thursday night.
Clutch hits by Holden Hughes, James Burkhart, Bryton Amsdill and John Vaara in the bottom of the seventh pulled out the win. Brantyn Fisler went 3 for 3 with a triple and a double for Swain’s.
First Federal was ahead all game thanks to great play in the field by Edun Bailey and a 4 for 4 hitting performance from both Blake Meredith and Weston Hart.
Swain’s also beat Westport 14-1 Wednesday.
Westport had some pitching issues with their junior varsity players still committed to the high school and unable to pitch.
Caden Acosta and James Burkhardt had three hits and three RBIs apiece for Swain’s. Vaara went the distance for Swain’s striking out six and scattering four hits.
Lions edge Laurel
PORT ANGELES — Lions outlasted Laurel Lanes 11-9 in Cal Ripken 12U majors baseball.
Kason Albaugh picked up the win on the mound for Lions.
Brody Shortridge and Aidric McBride went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Lions.
Colton Romero struck out eight in three innings of relief to pace Laurel Lanes.
Tranco on top
PORT ANGELES — Tranco got the better of Leitz Farm Store in an 11-6 12U Majors softball win.
Tatum Moses struck out five in the circle to earn the win.
She was backed up by some tough defending, with Tranco making seven put-outs to keep Leitz off the scoreboard.
At the plate, Teanna Clark, Morgan Politika, Lillie Commerree and Claire Smith had base hits for Tranco.
Lynzee Reid pitched all four innings, striking out four for Leitz Farm. Offensively, Reid, Audree Hebert, Lexie Smith, Lindsay Smith and Bridget Weed all had base hits.
Boulevard powers
PORT ANGELES — Natalie Robinson went 3 for 3 with a grand-slam home run and two singles to lead Boulevard Wellness to a 17-6 win over PA Power Equipment in a 12U Majors softball contest.
Kendall Mitchell pitched all four innings for PA Power, striking out five.
