PORT ANGELES — With a rich sports history that dates back to the early 1960s, Peninsula College is reaching out to the community to nominate teams, athletes and other individuals for consideration for the 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The Pirate Athletic Program created a hall of fame in 2014 and so far has inducted two teams and eight individuals. The 2014 ceremony opened the Pirate Hall of Fame with the 1970 Pirate men’s basketball team, Jerry Allen, Kathy Murphy-Carey, and the late Art Feiro and Dr. Wally Sigmar.
Deadline for submissions is Tuesday. An electronic form and criteria is available via the College’s athletic website under Hall of Fame at www.gopcpirates.com. Nominations are welcome from community members, students and employees.
Peninsula’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will meet in early November to determine the 2018 inductees. Those inductees will be announced at the annual Pirate Casino Night in February and officially inducted at a ceremony in June.
The 2016 Hall of Fame Induction event celebrated the 2010 Pirate men’s soccer team, as well as Rose Moorhead, Scooter Chapman, Jim Clem and the late Jim Lunt.

Dry Hill trail day
PORT ANGELES — Rainy weather washed out last week’s mountain bike trail day at Dry Hill near Port Angeles, but the event has been rescheduled for Saturday.
Downhill mountain bikers can shred all the trails at Dry Hill from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The cost is $40 and shuttle rides are included.

Pickles join Lefties’ league
PORTLAND — The Portland Pickles have joined the West Coast League, the summer collegiate wood-bat league baseball league home to the Port Angeles Lefties, and will begin play in June of 2018.
Founded in 2015, the Portland Pickles play their home games at Walker Stadium in southeast Portland’s Lents Park.
The Pickles ownership group, Rose City Baseball, also purchased the Gresham GreyWolves. After two WCL seasons, the GreyWolves, will compete as an independent summer collegiate team in 2018.
Portland will host all eleven West Coast League teams in 2018.
“The Pickles brand is outstanding,” said Cowlitz owner Tony Bonacci. “They have done an excellent job connecting in their community and they really know how to have fun. We’re thrilled to welcome the Pickles to the WCL. We’ll benefit greatly from their location, energy and leadership.”
The Pickles following has grown tremendously as Portland’s attendance took off in 2017 ranking 18th in attendance at 1,684 per game for all North American summer collegiate baseball teams as compiled by Ballpark Digest.
Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan owns a share of the Pickles franchise.
