PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College honored athletes Kelly Kevershan, Jose Serna, Jamellia Clark, Trent Warren, Cindy Vasquez and Jocelyn Moore at the College’s student awards ceremony Tuesday at the Cornaby Center.
Each year the Pirate Athletic Department honors a male and female athlete from each sport for the Wally Sigmar and Art Feiro awards, recognizing athletes who exemplified leadership, athleticism, academics and citizenship.
The Wally Sigmar Award for soccer went to Kevershan, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., and to Serna, a freshman from Cowiche.
The Art Feiro Award for basketball went to Clark, of Las Vegas, Nev., and to Warren, of Melbourne, Australia, both sophomores.
In addition, the college annually recognizes two athletes for an award established by the McMullen family for returning female athletes who exemplified inspiration, dedication, accomplishment and ambassadorship during their freshman year. The William and Annie McMullen Award goes to Vasquez, a sophomore soccer player from Leavenworth and to Moore, a freshman basketball player from Coulee Dam.
“We had an outstanding group of student athletes this year and thus had many choices for these awards, but this group of six young women and men are pretty special,” said Rick Ross, Associate Dean for Athletics and Student Life. “Their contribution to their teams, the College and our community is quite remarkable.”
The awards were named after the late Dr. Wally Sigmar, a hall of fame soccer coach and former Peninsula College president, the late Art Feiro, a hall of fame athletic director who founded athletics at Peninsula in the early 1960s, and for William and Annie McMullen, who’s family established a trust, and an award, at the college to contribute to athletic scholarships.
Hamnidang tourney set
PORT ANGELES — White Crane Martial Arts will have Grandmasters from Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Canada, Korea and Thailand at the Hamnidang Tournament Aug. 4 at Peninsula College.
There will be demo competition early in the day and a bigger demonstration in the evening featuring the world famous Hodori Tiger Cub black belt junior demonstration team from Korea. Tickets will be on sale immediately and White Crane is giving special discounts for military personnel and low-income families.
This will be the biggest gathering of martial arts specialists to ever come to Port Angeles.
White Crane Martial Arts is also looking for families to help host the Korean visitors. The White Crane students will get the first opportunity to take the kids home for the week, then community volunteers after that.
The kids will be busy doing activities during the days, so they can be at White Crane all day, but the goal of the trip is for the kids to see America and witness American family life, so they need to go home with a family every night and see how we live.
Interested volunteers will need to apply at White Crane right away so there is time to go through the vetting process, unless you are already known to the school. Interested parties may contact Grandmaster Robert Nicholls at (360) 808-2271 for questions and suggestions. Hosts will be invited to attend all activities free, including a trip to Hurricane Ridge and the big show Aug. 4 at the college.
