PC soccer alum wins NPSL title with Miami FC

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — A star for the Peninsula men’s soccer team from 2010-11 helped set up a goal to lead his team to the National Premier Soccer League championship this weekend.

Miguel Gonzalez, who scored 34 goals for the Pirates in 2011, helped set up the first goal and picked up an assist in Miami FC’s win over the New York Cosmos in the NPSL championship game Saturday. Miami FC won the game 3-1.

Gonzalez had 15 goals and four assists for the Pirates in 2010 and followed up that season with 34 goals and 10 assists in 2011, leading the Northwest Athletic Conference in points and goals.

Gonzalez, from Yelm, went to play at Seattle University after he was done at Peninsula. He has played professionally for the Seattle Sounders 2, the Kitsap Pumas, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and the Oklahoma City Energy FC.

Gonzalez had 13 goals and 10 assists in the regular season for Miami FC this season.

The NPSL is a fourth-tier league and a part of the United States Adult Soccer Association.

PC soccer begins

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men and women’s soccer teams begin their season with scrimmages this weekend in Canada.

The men will play the University of Victoria at 2 p.m. Saturday and Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo at noon Sunday.

The men will host Fraser Valley at Wally Sigmar Field at 2 p.m. Aug. 16, while the women will travel to Vancouver Island to play VIU and Victoria from Aug. 18-20.

The defending NWAC champion women play non-conference games beginning at noon Aug. 22 versus Clark College at the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila and against Spokane at Starfire at noon Aug. 23.

The men will play Highline at Starfire at 2 p.m. Aug. 22 and against Spokane at Starfire at 2 p.m. Aug. 23.

The women host a pair of non-conference games on Aug. 25 and 26. They play the University of Northern British Columbia at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 and against the University of Mary at 11 a.m. Aug. 26.
