AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: PA’s Gracie Long fifth in state Multi-Events heptathlon

LAKE STEVENS — Port Angeles’ Gracie Long competed in one last high school track and field event this weekend, finishing fifth in the state in the women’s heptathlon at the Washington State Multi-Events Championship on Friday and Saturday.

Long, going up against mostly athletes from 2A, 3A and 4A, finished with 3,801 points. The winner was Alaina Braidy of Tahoma.

Thirty-one top female athletes from around the state competed in the event. Long finished within the top 20 in all seven heptathlon events.

Long, the state champion this year in the 1,600 meters at the 2A Track and Field Championships a week ago, won the 800 meters in 2:20.23, a personal-best time by two seconds. She finished third in the high jump at 1.54 meters (5 feet, ½ inch).

Long finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 27.46 meters (90-0¾), the top Port Angeles girls’ javelin throw of the year. She was 15th in the shot put with a distance of 7.22 meters (23-7 feet), 17th in the long jump with a leap of 4.49 meters (14-7¼ feet) and 19th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.69.

Long will be running track and cross-country for Corban University in Salem, Ore., beginning in the fall.

UW wins at regionals

CONWAY, S.C. — Nick Kahle hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as third-seeded Washington moved a win away from the NCAA Tournament’s super regional round with an 11-6 victory over top-seeded host Coastal Carolina on Saturday.

The Huskies (32-23) will only need to defeat Coastal or UConn on Sunday night (after press deadline) to move on.

Washington got going with a big, six-run second inning that was highlighted by catcher Kahle’s grand slam.

Coastal Carolina (43-18), which won the 2016 College World Series, rallied to cut the lead to 7-6 in the sixth. But Washington answered with two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh to take control.

Huskies relievers Stevie Emanuel and Alex Hardy combined for three scoreless innings to close out the Chanticleers.

Gonzaga, playing at the Minneapolis regional, lost to UCLA 6-5 on Friday, beat Canisius 8-2 on Saturday and lost again to UCLA 10-4 on Sunday.
