Pairs tennis tourney set in Sequim

SEQUIM — The 2014 Sequim Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held at the Sequim High School tennis courts at 601 N. Sequim Ave., from Friday through Sunday, July 11-13.

The event is sponsored by Peninsula Tennis Club and is open to the public.

Play will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Players of all levels of tennis ability are welcome to participate.

The cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

Tennis camp slated

SEQUIM — Sign-ups are underway for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula’s sixth annual two-week tennis camp for children ages 5-17.

The camp will be held at the Sequim High School tennis courts from 9 a.m. to noon from July 7-11 and July 14-18.

Participants can register at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club at 400 W. Fir St. in Sequim.

Cost for club members is $10 and $40 for nonmembers. T-shirt, snacks and lunches are included.

The fee for nonmembers includes a club membership valid through Dec. 31.

The tennis camp is organized and planned by the newly United States Tennis Association-recognized Boys & Girls Club’s Youth Tennis Club.

Instructors include United States Tennis Association teaching pros Don Thomas of Sequim and his brother Bill of Bisbee, Ariz.

Sequim High School tennis coach Justine Wagner and Wolves varsity players Karen Chan and Matthew Richards also will instruct.

Runners advance

KENT — North Olympic Track Club members Jolene Millsap and Gracie Long recently competed in the U.S. Track and Field Junior Olympics Association Championships and have advanced to the regional championship in Spokane from July 3-6.

Millsap, a recent Port Angeles High School graduate, finished third in the 100-meter dash, and fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.90 seconds.

Millsap also combined with athletes from the south Kitsap area to run and qualify in the 4×100-meter relay and 4×400 relay.

Long, who will compete as a freshman at Port Angeles next school year, finished tied for second in her age group in the high jump, third in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:57, and fifth in the 1,500 with a time of 5:05.00.

It was the first race for Long at those distances, as junior high and high school meet distances are 3,200 and 1,600 meters.

Big BMX weekend

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles BMX is readying for a Big 500 Point Weekend from Friday through Sunday.

Friday’s competition is a single-point race.

Saturday’s double-point race will raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the fight against blood cancers.

All riders collect money from sponsors for this cause.

A state qualifying event is planned Sunday.

Camping will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis.
