VANCOUVER LAKE — The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association competed in its first regatta of the season at Vancouver Lake Spring Sprints on Saturday, with Cooper Disque taking third in his heat in the men’s Jr. single boat.
Disque came from behind in the sprint to edge out the boat in front of him by 0.5 seconds, finishing with a time of 9 minutes, 7.78 seconds.
The brother/sister duo of Cooper and Maria Disque finished fifth in the mixed Jr. doubles boat with a time of 8:59.14.
Earlier in the day, Mariah Disque paired with Kadence Gruel in the women’s Jr. U17 doubles race, finishing fifth in 11:43.96.

Players of the year
SEATTLE — Coaches and players from local leagues were named among the best in the state in boys basketball this week by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.
The 1A player of the year was Jeremiah Harshman of Annie Wright, which plays in the same Nisqually League as East Jefferson. The 1A coach of the year was Dominque Williams of Annie Wright.
The 2A coach of the year was Miah Davis of Bremerton. Bremerton was the co-champion, along with Sequim, of the Olympic League and went on to win the 2A state championship. Davis’ son, Jalen Davis of Bremerton, was certainly a candidate for state player of the year, but that went to Brant Heppner of Lynden. Jalen Davis, the Olympic League MVP, scored 34 points in Bremerton’s win over Prosser in the championship game.
The 1B coach of the year was Jerome Toby of Lummi Nation. Lummi won the state championship, narrowly defeating their old rival Neah Bay in the semifinals.
The 2025 Mr. Basketball award went to Jaylen Petty of Rainier Beach. The 4A player of the year was Josiah Lee of Glacier Peak; the 3A player of the year was Kaden Powers of Rainier Beach; the 2B player of the year was Quincy Scott of Columbia-Burbank; and the 1B player of the year was Franky Wynne of Wellpinit.
The 4A coach of the year was Matty McIntyre of Gonzaga Prep; the 3A coach of the year was Mike Bethea of Rainier Beach; and the 2B coach of the year was Todd Schumacher of Columbia-Burbank.
