Rowing club performs well at indoor meet
SEATTLE — Members of the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association recently participated in the Northwest Ergomania Championships, an unofficial kickoff to the rowing season, in which competitors from regional clubs use rowing machines known as ERGS to calculate the distances they have rowed in meters.
Rowers train on these ERGS as part of their rowing programs conditioning routine when they are not on the water.
Most OPRA rowers were first-time competitors who conquered their nerves and jitters to compete in events ranging from the 500-meter dash up to the grueling 2,000-meter race.
Several area rowers broke personal record times.
The club also had the smallest number of competitors present, but came away more more medals and ribbons than any other youth club, medaling in four of six events.
“I was impressed by their hard work, determination and grit that our rowers have displayed throughout this year’s winter training,” coach Deb Swinford said.
Cyrus Mills won the Boys 500-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 41.50 seconds.
Zachary Galvin set a PR while placing third (1:46.50) and Vince Pavlak was fourth with a PR (1:53.6).
Lisa Callahan claimed the girls 500-meter dash with a PR of 1:58.4. Angelica Kennedy set a new record with a third-place finish in 2:03.3.
Nathaniel Mischler placed second with a personal-best time of 6:49.50 in the men’s Youth Novice 2K.
Other rowers setting personal records included Claire Tyson, Ella Ventura, Jack Feingold, Scott Kennedy, Jake McGovern, Aiden Feingold, Tyler Turner and Daniel Weaver.

Joyce hoops tourney
JOYCE — Registration is open for the Second annual Logger Men’s Basketball Tournament in Joyce on Saturday and Sunday, March 18-19.
The tournament is open to players 18 years and older and has a four-game guarantee. It will have a pool play format followed by bracket play to determine an overall champion.
The winners will receive championship t-shirts.
The entry fee is $225 per team.
Proceeds will benefit the Crescent High School basketball program.

Adams honored
FORKS — Forks senior boys basketball player Marky Adams was recognized this week as the boys Class 1A Athlete of the Week by the WIAA.
Adams is averaging 27.75 points per game over the last four contests as the Spartans went 3-1 and earned the Evergreen League’s second seed in the district playoffs.
Adams will receive a letter of recognition from the WIAA Executive Director, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week beanie and certificate.
