FORKS — Weekend rain on the West End did the trick as the Quillayute and Sol Duc rivers will re-open to recreational fishing beginning Wednesday.
This impacts the Quillayute River from the Olympic National Park boundary upstream to the confluence of the Bogachiel and Sol Duc rivers and from the mouth of the Sol Duc to the Olympic National Park boundary.
Previously set to open in mid-September, the fisheries were delayed by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to protect a wild summer coho run expected to return at an abundance of less than 300 adults.
Combined with record-low flows in the Quillayute watershed, increased caution was needed to reduce impact from fisheries as coho stage in the lower river.
The Quillayute River is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in September to avoid gear conflicts between recreational anglers and Quileute Tribal netters.
The tribe also will fish the Quillayute River.

Fall moto series
PORT ANGELES — Olympic Peninsula Motorcycle Club’s Triple Crown Fall Series opens with Round 1 of motocross action Saturday and Sunday at its track at 1306 Deer Park Road.
The gate opens at 6 p.m. Friday, with on-site camping available for $15 for the general public and free for OPMC members.
Gates will open at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Practice will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with a $30 charge for the public and $15 for club members.
Sunday’s races will begin at 9 a.m. with the same $30/$15 price structure.
General admission to watch the races is $10.
Cash will only be accepted at the entry gate.
Round 2 is set for Oct. 16-17, and Round 3 is Nov. 5-6.

Future Riders sweep
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ Future Riders youth football program racked up a week-two sweep of East Jefferson in games played at Civic Field last Saturday.
The A squad started right where they left off last week with a 34-0 victory over East Jefferson.
The well-rounded offense was led by Parker Pavlak, who tallied two touchdowns and ran for more than 100 yards. He also added 10 tackles. Capt. Ben Clemens led a defense that only allowed a few first downs. Clemens also added a 55-yard TD run.
B Squad’s defense shined and helped the offense gain momentum on the way to its own 34-0 victory.
Nose guard Alex Kilmer was the game’s defensive MVP.
A good effort by the offensive line allowed Landon Eastman, Cannon Free, Aiden Soiseth and offensive MVP fullback Eli King to dominate the Rivals through the air and on the ground.
The C Squad shut down East Jefferson 31-0 with Connor Eaton piling up seven sacks to frustrate the Rivals’ offense.
Trust Christenson returned a kick for a 65-yard touchdown and Hunter Stone scored four touchdowns, bringing his season total to 10.
