AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: North Olympic League basketball all-league teams announced; pair honored for state tourney play; freestyle wrestling starting in PA

North Olympic League boys and girls hoops

PORT ANGELES — Neah Bay and Clallam Bay boys and girls basketball players filled up the North Olympic League All-League teams in voting by league coaches.

On the girls side, league champion Neah Bay’s Courtney Swan was picked as Offensive MVP while teammate Laila Greene was the choice as Defensive MVP.

The sophomores were selected to the first-team squad along with classmate and teammate Ruth Moss.

Clallam Bay seniors Miriam Wonderly and Hannah Olson also made the first team.

Second-team selections included Neah Bay junior Cei’J Gagnon, Clallam Bay sophomore Cedar Johnson and Crescent senior Jasmin O’Neel.

First-year head coach Tina Grimes-Brown of Neah Bay was voted Coach of the Year.

On the boys side, Clallam Bay senior Ryan McCoy was tabbed as Offensive MVP, while Neah Bay senior Sean Bitegeko was voted Defensive MVP.

They were joined on the first team by Neah Bay seniors Keith Johnson Jr., Cameron Moore and Crescent junior Eric Emery.

Area second-team picks are Neah Bay senior Jay Brunk, and Crescent junior Mason Owen and sophomore Brendon Bergstrom.

Crescent coach Chris Ferrier was picked as Coach of the Year.

State tourney honors

PORT ANGELES — Two North Olympic Peninsula athletes earned second-team All-Tournament honors for their play in girls basketball state tournaments last week.

Port Angeles’ Madison Cooke was picked to the Class 2A All-Tournament second team, while Neah Bay’s Ruth Moss was a Class 1B All-Tournament second team selection.

Beyonce Bea of 2A champion Washougal and Dakota Patchen of 1B champion Colton were voted MVPs.

Voting was conducted by high school print media writers.

Youth wrestling in PA

PORT ANGELES — Registration and practices begin Monday for the Port Angeles Wrestling Club’s freestyle season.

Practices will be held twice a week from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the Port Angeles High School wrestling room. Wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete in optional weekend tournaments. The season ends May 4.

The cost is $70 per wrestler. For wrestlers who participated in the Folkstyle season, the cost will be $30. Discounts are available for families with three or more participants and scholarships are available.
