Anglers finding plenty of catches in salmon derby

GARDINER — Good-sized blackmouth chinook are found up and down the leaderboard after two days of fishing in the Olympic Peninsula Salmon Derby.

A total of 26 fish weighing 10 pounds or larger had been landed as of the close of fishing at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) produced the biggest fish thus far, a 19.35-pound specimen, caught by Clinton angler Mark Thompson on Friday morning and weighed in at 10:05 a.m. in Port Townsend.

Port Angeles’ Don Hansen is in second place with a 13.9-pounder caught in Marine Area 6 (Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca) and weighed in at 10:31 a.m. Friday in Gardiner.

Poulsbo’s Chris Gregerson sits third with a 13.65-pound blackmouth, weighed in at the Port Townsend Boat Haven at 10:04 a.m. Friday.

Clallam Bay angler Mike Barksdale landed the biggest fish Saturday, a 13.3-pound chinook weighed in at 10:01 a.m., to take over fourth place.

All told, 762 anglers had caught 190 fish weighing a combined 1,521 pounds through Saturday.

Fishing continues today, with the final weigh-ins held at 1 p.m.

A barbecue begins at noon today and the award ceremony will be held at the Gardiner Boat Ramp at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Fit 5 sessions at YMCA

PORT ANGELES — A free, eight-week fitness program to help kids ages 8 to 17 and their families learn healthy habits for life will be offered by the Olympic Peninsula YMCA beginning April 8.

The YMCA says the FIT 5 program allows kids and their families time and a place to strengthen muscles while strengthening their relationships at no cost to the family.

This program will meet every Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA of Port Angeles, 302 S. Francis St.

Kids and parents will meet with a qualified wellness coach each week while keeping a food and movement journal.

Healthy recipes and snack ideas will be provided.

Bike rodeo in May

SEQUIM — The first Sequim Bike Rodeo is set for May 18 and will be hosted by the Olympic Peninsula Bicycle Alliance.

The free event is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Helen Haller Elementary School bus lot on Fir Street.

Children will be taught safe and cooperative riding on roads and trails, bike handling skills, bike control, slow speed balance, steering, acceleration, stopping and leaning.

Participants’ bicycles will be inspected and adjusted by area bicycle shop experts, helmets will be fitted properly, and once cleared, children will maneuver their bikes through a series of skill and safety events in a controlled environment and under the guidance of skilled area cyclists.

Parents can observe their child’s performance from the sidelines.

There are rewards for successful completion of the course and safety instruction and handouts for the parents.
