RENTON — Venues have been announced for the 2019 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association football state championships.
The Tacoma Dome had hosted the WIAA Gridiron Classic since the 1995 season, but the WIAA Executive Committee decided earlier this year to move out of the dome due to rising rental fees and a new seating configuration at the facility.
The six classifications will all stay in the South Puget Sound Area.
The 1B and 4A championships will be held at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma. The state track and field championships are already held at this stadium.
The 2B and 1A state championships will be held at Harry E. Lang Stadium at Clover Park High School in Lakewood and the 2A and 3A state championships will be held at Sparks Stadium near the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup.
All games will be scheduled as doubleheaders with the first game at noon and the second at 4 p.m. The three stadiums are located 13 miles from each other. A ticket purchased at any location will provide entry for all three sites.
“The mission of the WIAA staff the Executive Board was to find three locations that were close in proximity to each other and could handle the needs of a WIAA state championship,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “We are grateful for each of the site managers who made these great stadiums available as we believe they will provide a terrific atmosphere for the biggest games of the year.”
If two schools from similar geographical areas in central or eastern Washington advance to the championship game of their classification, they do have the option to play the game at a mutually agreed-upon site pending WIAA approval.
Volleyball deadline
PORT ANGELES — The registration deadline is Oct. 4 for a Port Angeles Parks and Recreation adult coed volleyball league.
The season begins in early October and lasts until February 2020. Matches will be held at Stevens Middle School. The cost is $550 per team.

Updated salmon rules
OLYMPIA—The state Department of Fish and Wildlife on Monday reminded anglers that all chinook in marine areas 5 (Sekiu and Pillar Point) and 6 (East Juan de Fuca Strait) must be released.
The daily limit for coho was reduced Monday to one in these two areas, plus marine areas 8-1 (Deception Pass, Hope Island, Skagit Bay), 9 (Admiralty Inlet), 10 (Seattle/Bremerton), 11 (Tacoma/Vashon Island) and 13 (South Puget Sound).
Since early September, state and tribal co-managers have been assessing coho runs throughout Puget Sound waters and Preliminary information indicates that returning coho have a smaller body size and potentially lower-than-expected run sizes than in many systems. The state is implementing this rule as a precaution to ensure escapement and hatchery goals are met.
Salmon rules for this week in local areas are:
Marine Area 5: Monday through Sept. 30: Daily limit 2; up to 1 coho may be retained. Chum, wild coho and Chinook must be released.
Marine Area 6: Monday through Sept. 30: Daily limit 2; up to 1 coho may be retained. Chum, wild coho, and Chinook must be released.
