Tennis tourney to raise funds
PORT ANGELES — A benefit tennis tournament to raise funds for The Smile Train, a charity to help babies in developing countries get surgery for cleft and lip palate, will be held Dec. 14.
The tournament is being held in memory of John Hubbard, a longtime Christmas-time Santa in Port Angeles who died in October.
“He provided a lot of smiles for a lot of children” said tennis tournament organizer Sherrie Schouten. She knew Hubbard from when she took photos at the Festival of Trees’ Teddy Bear Tea.
Schouten said she came up with the idea to create the tournament as a memorial to Hubbard. It’s called the First Memorial Holly Jolly Very Merry Happy Holiday Tennis Tournament.
The event, being held at the Erickson Playfield tennis courts, will run from noon to 4 p.m. The cost is $20 per person with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Smile Train charity. People also can declare it a non-taxable donation, and people can earn extra points in the tennis competition for showing up in Santa clothes.

Racquetball tourney
SEQUIM — The YMCA of Sequim is holding a winter racquetball tournament Dec. 7.
It will be a round-robin tournament with two matches to 11 points. Players can sign up as singles players or as part of a doubles team. Eye guards are mandatory, and players are responsible for keeping match times.
The entry deadline is Monday. Tournament play will begin at 1 p.m.
