AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Late free throw sinks Peninsula women; Elks Hoop Shoot Saturday; Babe Ruth board meets Monday

PC women foiled by late free throw

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball were edged out Bellevue 51-50 at the last second in a back-and-forth contest with Bellevue that doubled as the NWAC North Divison opener for each team.

Casandra White tied the game at 50-all with a 3-point basket with 15 seconds left for the Pirates, but Peninsula fouled Jahdai Alcombrack with one second to play and Alcombrack hit one of two free throws to seal the win.

Ashlynn Sharp had 10 points, four steals, three assists, three rebounds for Peninsula (0-1, 7-6) while White added 10 points off the bench.

Kuutuuq Danner scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds for the Pirates.

Peninsula visits Edmonds (1-0, 6-3) on Saturday.

Elks Hoop Shoot

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Elks Club will host this year’s youth Hoop Shoot at Stevens Middle School on Saturday.

Boys and girls ages 8 to 13 are welcome.

Eight and 9-year olds will shoot from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Ten and 11-year-olds will shoot from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12- and 13-year-olds will shoot from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

The top shooter in each category will be invited to participate at the district competition in Sequim later this month.

Coffee will be available for parents.

Babe Ruth meeting

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Junior Babe Ruth will hold a board meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Field clubhouse.

Anyone interested in volunteering with the organization is welcome to attend.

The group is in neeed of umpires, coaches and concession volunteers throughout the season.
