AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Kids’ fishing derby to be held April 6

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers are sponsoring another Kids’ Fishing Derby at the Lincoln Park ponds from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. April 6.

Kids from 5 to 14 years old can fish using conventional spin gear with bait and lures. The Kiwanis, Les Schwab, Re/Max Realty and Swain’s General Store are all supporting the event.

The Kiwanis Club will be at the Loomis Cabin serving hot dogs. There will be first-, second- and third-place prizes in five age divisions for the biggest fish caught, which will be awarded immediately after the derby ends at 10:30 a.m.

Prices include quality fishing outfits, rods, accessories and tackle boxes. Fishing starts at 8 a.m. and measuring begins at 8:30 a.m.

Sequim Picklers

SEQUIM — The Sequim Picklers are forming the Sequim Picklers Minor League Pickleball League.

There are 12 teams in the MLP-style team pickleball, each composed of two men and two women — The Sequim Suns, The Port Angeles Watchmen, x-40 Kraken, Lavender Lobbers, Ravens, Da-dink’quents, Sun Setters, Dungeness Dills, PBJ, Needs Practice, Dungeness Dinkers and Four-Pack Clausens. Some of the teams have created logos, uniforms and slogans.

League organizers hope to continue expanding the league by drawing in more teams from around the Olympic Peninsula and surrounding areas.

Each team has an aggregate rating calculated by adding up the individual ratings of team members. Teams may play up a division, but not down. Matches are scheduled by one team posting a challenge, and when the challenge is accepted, team captians arrange a time and place, typically Carrie Blake Park in Sequim.

Matches consist of four games — men’s doubles, women’s doubles and two mixed doubles.

To find out about up coming league matches, check the pop-up page on the Sequim Picklers website: www.sequimpickleball.com, the Sequim Picklers Facebook page or the bulletin board at the Sequim Picklers shed in Carrie Blake Park.

Hole in one

SEQUIM — Cedars at Dungeness reported a hole-in-one on March 16 by a course member.

Rick Bigham made the hole-in-one at the temporary par 3 hole No. 9A from 118 yards out with his 8-iron and Callaway ERC soft ball. It was witnessed by playing partners Tony Imbarrato and Kevin Grau and was Bigham’s second career hole-in-one.

Some of the holes have been closed due to an irrigation system renovation project over the winter months. The No. 9A is a temporary hole so golfers can still play a full 18 holes.
