AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Kamae, Tuisaula named NWAC players of the week back-to-back

VANCOUVER — For two straight weeks, the Peninsula College women’s basketball team had players named as Northwest Athletic Conference players of the week.

For the week of Dec. 12-18, Tati Kamae, from Kaie, Hawaii, received honors for averaging 19.3 points and six assists per game over three games in a Pirates home tournament held in Port Angeles. Peninsula won all three of those games as part of an eight-game winning streak.

Kamae had 26 points in a 71-67 win over Mount Hood on Dec. 16, but her best game may have come in a 63-41 win over Pierce College on Dec. 18. She scored 18 points and set an all-time Peninsula College record with 14 steals.

Kamae came up with the performance with Peninsula’s leading scorer and rebounder, Ituau Tuisaula, out nursing a knee injury.

“We had one of our best players out for all three games, and Tati really stepped up,” said head coach Ali Crumb. “She set the singlegame steals record with 14 steals in one game. We won all three games with Tati really stepping up in the absence of our leading scorer and rebounder.”

Speaking of Tuisaula, she was the NWAC player of the week for the week of Dec. 5-11.

She had 21 points and 19 rebounds against Big Bend and 26 points and 10 rebounds against Lower Columbia.
