JOYCE — Two Joyce flag football teams won championships at the Port Angeles YMCA Flag Football Super Bowl this weekend.
Winning the 11U championship in a close game against the Port Angeles Eagles was the Joyce Jets.
The Jets got out to a big lead, but Port Angeles rallied in the fourth quarter to nearly tie the game. The Joyce defense made several big plays in the fourth quarter to go on to win 36-28.
It was the third straight Super Bowl win for a Joyce 11U team.
The Joyce Ravens 14U team won by a huge margin. It was the first year that Joyce fielded a 14U team.
HOF scholarships
SEQUIM — Two Sequim High School graduates — Ivy Barrett and Elizabeth Beebe — have some extra help in their pursuit of academic degrees, thanks to the Sequim Hall of Fame.
The organization recently awarded these 2025 SHS graduates a scholarship each worth $2,500, with funds raised from the 2024 Sequim Hall of Fame event.
Barrett received the Aubrey and Carol Verstegen Scholarship. She excelled in both soccer and track and field at Sequim High, finishing second in the state in the 400-meter run in her junior year in 2024. She also was a referee, a volunteer coach and helped with a fundraiser for her soccer team.
Barrett worked several after-school jobs and plans to attend the University of Washington, where she plans to pursue a career in medicine and exercise science/physiology.
Beebe was awarded the John Knapman Foundation scholarship. She participated in FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) each of her four years at Sequim High. She participated and excelled in trap shooting each of those years. She also volunteered at the Sequim Food Bank and worked at the Olympic Game Farm, her family’s business.
Beebe is interested in a career in veterinary science and plans to attend Washington State University.
Sequim HOF dinner
SEQUIM — The second annual Sequim Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony will be held Sept. 13 at the Guy Cole Convention Center at 202 N. Blake Ave., Sequim.
Individual seating is available for $100.

The inaugural 2024 Sequim Hall of Fame inducted eight individuals and one team, and in the process it raised about $28,000 for Sequim High School athletics.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The North Olympic 13U team will play its final game of pool play at 10:30 a.m. today versus a team from Stamford, Conn., at the Babe Ruth 13YO World Series.
North Olympic played late Tuesday afternoon against an Australian team with the result after press deadline. Go online at www.peninsuladailynews.com to find results of the Australia game.
Going into Tuesday’s game, North Olympic was 0-2 in its first two games, losing to Tallahassee, Fla., 13-0 and to Broomall-Newtown, Pa., 4-1. North Olympic likely has to win its final two games to qualify for the elimination round that begins Thursday.

Sockeye open
OLYMPIA — The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that sockeye opened Tuesday in Marine Areas 5 (Sekiu and Pillar Point), 6 (Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca) and 7 (San Juan Islands).
Sockeye retention will remain open as part of the salmon daily limit until Aug. 31.
There is no minimum size. The daily limit is two sockeye, plus two additional pink salmon. All Chinook, chum and wild coho must be released.
The WDFW is forecasting that the return of sockeye to the Fraser River is projected to be above forecast, allowing for sockeye retention in Puget Sound recreational fisheries.
