AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Green and White Day for Roughrider basketball

Green and White Day for PA basketball

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles boys basketball will hold a Green and White Day season tipoff event at Port Angeles High School from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24.

The free event will provide a first-hand look at teams in grades four through eight, plus the high school program’s varsity, JV and C squad teams.

Each team will get a 5-minute warmup session and play a 10-minute long quarter of basketball.

Games begin at 4 p.m. with fourth-grade players and continue up the grade level ladder, with C squad set for 5:50 p.m., JV at 6:10, games and contests at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity session at 6:45 p.m.

Roughrider gear will be given away, games and contests will be held and all fans are asked to wear Port Angeles green and white.

Hinrichs plays vs. UW

SEATTLE — Former Port Angeles High School basketball standout Maddy Hinrichs played a role in Idaho State’s women’s basketball 79-59 upset of No. 25 Washington last Sunday.

It was the first time in program history that Idaho State has defeated a ranked opponent.

Hinrichs played 9 minutes in the Bengals’ victory, scoring two points on a layup in the first quarter that gave Idaho State a 24-14 lead.

The junior guard, a 2014 Port Angeles grad, played for Whatcom and Lower Columbia before transferring to Idaho State.

Warren is NWAC MVP

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College’s Sydney Warren was selected as the Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year.

Warren, a sophomore from Maple Valley, led the NWAC in goals scored with a Peninsula College record 31. That goal-scoring total included four hat tricks and a four-goal game against Shoreline.

She also had seven assists to tally a conference-best 69 points and lead the Pirates (20-1-0) to a berth in the NWAC Finals.

OPRA Scrimmage

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association recently celebrated its 10th anniversary by holding the first John Halberg Memorial Scrimmage.

Halberg was a founder of the rowing program. This scrimmage was the first step toward turning this event into a full-scale regatta, with rowing crews from all over the region invited to attend.

Rowers from all OPRA programs: juniors, varsity, novice, recreational and masters raced in 1,200-meter head style races out in front of the OPRA Boathouse on Ediz Hook.

OPRA athletes raced in 1xs, 2xs, 4xs and 4+. Most rowers competed twice, putting on a great show of competition and boat handling skills.

After the completion of the races, junior rowers gave families and friends an opportunity to get into an 8+ boat and rowed them around Port Angeles Harbor to see what it was like in a racing shell and what demanding work these rowers put in to hone their craft.
