Fundraiser for traveling volleyball team

CHIMACUM — The U17 School of Volleyball traveling team is raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to play at the junior national volleyball championships later in June in Orlando, Fla.

One of the players on the team is Akira Anderson, a junior 4.0 student who played volleyball for Chimacum her freshman, sophomore and junior years. The team is coached by former Chimacum volleyball coach Dardo Olivera.

Anderson is one of the players featured on the team’s video that can be found on their GoFundMe page at www.tinyurl.com/SoV-GoFundMe. She is No. 3. The team’s goal is $15,000 and so far has raised $8,118.

The team lost three of its members, Marina Miller, Hannah Wachsman and Hazel Kleiner, all from Bainbridge Island in a March 16 traffic collision on Bainbridge Island.

“We want to go to Orlando to honor and play for our girls, Hannah, Hazel, and Marina,” Anderson said.

“If ever there was a team to champion, it is this year’s School of Volleyball U17 team. Consider supporting them in this last endeavor of the year,” the group’s GoFundMe page states. “Never has a group of young, teenage women experienced so much individual and corporate, private and public loss like this team has. If you know, you know and stand with the rest of us in awe of these fierce women.”

The Orlando tournament is being held June 26.
