PASADENA, Calif. — Class of 2021 Port Angeles graduate Jaida Wood is seeing plenty of court time with the Pacific Lutheran University basketball team as a freshman.
A key member of the Roughriders’ recent Olympic League and West Central District-champion squads, the 5-foot-9 Wood is making her presence known with the Lutes in early season action.
Wood knocked down 7 of 13 shots and had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in a home game against Northwest Indian College on Nov. 12.
She also played an important role in sparking PLU to a come-from-behind road win over Caltech last Saturday.
Wood earned her first start of the season and added 10 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, two assists and two steals as the Lutes rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit.
PLU tied the game early in the third on a Wood layup before seizing the lead on an Ava Edmonds layup with 5:42 remaining, capping off a 16-0 Lutes run spanning both halves.
Caltech responded, taking a 38-33 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Lutes utilized a 9-0 run to seize the lead. Wood started the run with a layup with less than seven minutes to go and bookended the rally with a 3-pointer with 4:21 remaining.
Wood and PLU (3-2) are back on the floor at Lewis & Clark in Portland on Dec. 3.
Julmist getting minutes
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Jayla Julmist, a Class of 2021 graduate of Sequim High School and a mainstay in the middle for the Wolves, is getting court time with The Masters University.
Julmist, listed at 5-11, is averaging 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in four games thus far.
She hit 3 of 3 shots and had two steals in a win over Bethesda, had six rebounds in a win over Antelope Valley and swatted two shots against Chapman.
Rodgers denies COVID toe
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says his toe injury is a fracture and added that he doesn’t expect the situation to cause him to miss any games.
Rodgers has been playing with the toe injury each of the past two games after missing a 13-7 loss at Kansas City because of a positive COVID-19 test. The reigning MVP said the injury occurred while working out at home during his quarantine.
“I’m going to deal with the pain,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “It’s all about pain management. I’m going to deal with the pain as this goes on, and hopefully we get some healing during the weeks with limited practice reps. I’ll try to be on the practice field as much as I can, deal with the pain, and the goal is to play every single week.”
The NFC North-leading Packers (8-3) host the Los Angeles Rams (7-3) on Sunday and then have the next week off.
He offered more details Wednesday to dispute a report that he had “COVID toe,” a name that’s been given to a condition causing lesions among some people who test positive for COVID-19.
While discussing his health Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube and SiriusXM, Rodgers said he “didn’t have any lingering effects other than the COVID toe,” but he was smirking as he made that comment.
When he was asked about it Wednesday, Rodgers revealed his bare left foot during his Zoom session with reporters.
“Oh, there’s no lesions whatsoever,” Rodgers said. “Oh, what a surprise. No, that’s actually called disinformation, when you perpetuate false information about an individual.”
