AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Former Peninsula College soccer player goes pro

HOUSTON — Former Peninsula College men’s soccer standout Sterling Penniston-John has signed an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract with Houston Dynamo 2, an offshoot of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo.

While at Peninsula in 2018-19, Penniston-John was a two-time Northwest Athletic Conference all-star as a defender, scoring three goals for the Pirates before transferring to play at Utah Valley University.

During his only full season with UVU, the Las Vegas native made appearances in 16 matches, starting seven times and finishing with one goal and one assist as a defender.

MLS NEXT Pro is a new professional soccer league set to debut in March at the third level of the U.S. Soccer professional pyramid, with 20 MLS clubs fielding second teams and one independent club.
