Former MLB pitcher to speak at Rotary
CHIMACUM — Former Major League Baseball pitcher and World Series winner Ray Washburn will speak to the Rotary Club of East Jefferson County on Thursday, June 6. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The club meets at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, at noon. Guests are welcomed.
Born in Pasco, Washburn pitched at Whitworth College in Spokane. He is best known for having led the St. Louis Cardinals to back-to-back World Series in 1967 and 1968, and for pitching the second of two back-to-back no-hitters in the same series with San Francisco in September 1968 (Gaylord Perry pitched the other).
An optional cafeteria-style lunch (salad $7, lunch $10) is available at 11:30 a.m. The meeting begins at noon and will wrap up at 1 p.m.

JeffCo youth soccer
PORT TOWNSEND — Registration for the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Department’s fall youth soccer season will begin Monday.
Early bird registration will be held from Monday to July 19. The cost is $65 with a multi-child discount of $5 per child registered.
Registration is available at www.CountyRec.com or in person at the rec center at 620 Tyler Street in Port Townsend, or at the Jefferson County Public Works office at 623 Sheridan Street in Port Townsend.
Registration and a check also can be sent to Jefferson County Public Works, 623 Sheridan St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.
Regular registration increases to $70 from July 20-Aug. 3. Registration received after Aug. 4 will be $75 and players will be put on a waiting list.
The league is also looking for volunteer coaches. The coaches’ meeting date will be Aug. 7.
Lane leads LCC
LONGVIEW — Earlier this week, former Port Angeles Roughrider standout Eric Lane coached Lower Columbia College to its third-straight Northwest Athletic Conference baseball championship.
The Red Devils swept Everett in a three-game championship series, rallying to win 10-2 and 2-0 on Monday.
In 2018, Lower Columbia won the NWAC championship with former Roughrider Travis Paynter and former Sequim High School player James Grubb, both former Wilder Baseball Club players such as Lane, on the roster.
Grubb also was on the 2019 Red Devils.
Port Angeles graduate Joel Wood has signed to play for Lower Columbia in 2020. Port Angeles softball standouts Lauren Lunt and Nizhoni Wheeler also play for the Red Devils softball team.
12-U Majors softball
PORT ANGELES — Tranco beat Jim’s Pharmacy 10-7 Monday in a come-from-behind win.
Tranco scored three runs in the first inning, but Jim’s answered with six runs of their own on hits by Jasmine Messenger, Abby Kimble, Savannah Boulton, and Madison Smith and a home run by Ava Sheahan.
Maryrose Halberg came in to pitch in the second inning and held Jim’s to one more run over the next four innings. She struck out 11.
Tranco collected 10 hits. Lillie Commerree went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs. Morgan Politika and Tatum Moses both went 2 for 2, both with a single and a double and multiple RBIs. Halberg and McKenzie Moses both had hits.
In the circle for Jim’s, Messenger struck out six in three innings. Sheahan pitched two innings with three strikeouts.
Swain’s shutout
PORT ANGELES — Swain’s defeated Local 155 6-0 on Tuesday in Olympic Junior Babe Ruth action. Elijah Flodstrom and Austin Seelye combined for the shutout for Swain’s.
Holden Hughes, Elijah Flodstrom, and John Vaara had two hits each and Bryton Amsdill put down a great squeeze bunt for a run. Peyton Cagey and Kole Acker each had two hits for Local. Matt Mangano pitched 5 innings for Local only giving up two runs.
