FORKS — A young Forks girls soccer team had its season come to a close with a 5-0 loss Monday in the District 4 2B tournament to top-seed Kalama, but coach Tracy Gillett thinks the future is bright for the Spartans.
“This team is special because we are 50 percent freshmen,” Gillett said. “They grew strength, endurance, speed and courage over the last year, and I couldn’t be prouder. I think this is just the beginning for girls soccer in Forks. I know next year we will accomplish even more.”
The Spartans finished their season 4-8-1 overall and 4-6 in the Pacific 2B league. However, that record is misleading as the Spartans started the season 0-6-1, but rallied with four wins in their last six matches.
We started out wanting to make history but didn’t know how far we would go. This squad … has my whole heart,” Gillett said.
“Playing the last game was bittersweet. At one point I am proud of these girls for accomplishing so much, including making it to Districts for the first time ever, and at another point I am sad imagining a team without my Seniors next year,” she said.
Gillett also thanked assistant coach Hugo Sandoval.
“He has helped the team grow to the players they are today. He sees what talent they have inside and helps them view it for themselves,” she said.
Quilcene game in Sequim
QUILCENE — Quilcene’s 1B district playoff game Saturday will be played at Sequim High School, according to Quilcene Athletic Director Mark Thompson.
The Rangers are technically the home team, but there were problems with Quilcene’s field, so the game was moved to Sequim. The Rangers will play Lummi at 2 p.m.
Both teams are 7-1. Lummi beat Quilcene 28-22, but that was early in the season. Lummi at one time was the No. 2-ranked 1B team in the state, but the Blackhawks were beaten by Neah Bay, dropping them to a lower seed and a road game.
Quilcene is the champion of the 1B SeaTac League.
Hill climb at Deer Park
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Motorcycle Club will hold the third round of the triple crown fall series Saturday and Sunday at Deer Park Road east of Port Angeles.
Gates will open at 6 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday’s practices will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $30 and $15 for OPMC members. Sunday’s races will begin at 9 a.m. with a cost of $30 per class.
Camping fees are $15, with OPMC members able to camp for free. General admission is $10, with cash only at entry gate and for sign-ups.
Peninsula soccer results
PORT ANGELES — The father-and- son duo of Oscar Gonzalez starred in a Peninsula Soccer League match Sunday between Forks FC and Strait Slice.
Forks FC won the high-scoring match 5-4. Forks’ Oscar Gonzalez Sr. scored a goal with an assist from Oscar Gonzalez Jr., and Oscar Gonzalez Jr. scored a goal with an assist from Oscar Gonzalez Sr.
Hugo Sandoval also had a goal and an assist, while Silvina Ramos and Pablo Tico had goals. Ernesto Julio had an assist.
For Strait Slice, Luke Strong Cvetich had two goals, and Sam Watson and Christine Loewe each had goals. Shanzi Tucker and Aaron Lee had assists.
The win keeps Forks FC tied for second place. The other second-place team, Windermere, won its match 4-1 over Pantry & Latch.
Ben Schneider scored a goal for Windermere with an assist to Josiah Long. Gabe Long had a goal and Alex Lopez scored on a penalty kick. Evan Swanson scored a goal with an assist to Alex Lopez.
Mike Ingraham scored a goal for Pantry & Latch with an assist to Alec Harrison.
Salazar Painting maintained its hold on first place, beating Pura Vida 4-1. Raul Medina had a hat trick with two assists from Juan C. Cisneros. Nick Allen also had a goal and Edgar Aceves scored a goal for Pura Vida.
The Bandidos FC tied with High Energy Metals 2-2. Chris Lopes and Felix Morales scored goals for Bandidos, while Nova Barrett and Andrew Cooper scored goals for High Energy Metals.
Salazar Painting leads the league with a 7-0-1 record (22 points). Windermere and Forks FC are tied for second with identical 6-1-1 records (19 points).
