PORT ANGELES — In a rematch of the fall championship, Forks FC once again took home the T-shirts, defeating Windermere Real Estate to win the Peninsula Soccer League’s spring competition Sunday at Sigmar Field.
Luis Perez scored both goals, one in each half, leading the Forks coed club past a hard-fighting Windermere club 2-0. Windermere, the self-proclaimed Buffalo Bills of the PSL, finished second for the fourth straight time, getting strong play out of their entire roster, but most notably Anna Petty and Paige Mason, who kept the pressure on the Forks FC backline and keeper for the entire match.
In other Sunday matches, Strait Slice edged High Energy Metals 3-2 in the match for third and fourth. Solace McGruther scored twice and Aaron Lee had a solo goal for the Pizza club. Ben Salgado and Craig Rice scored for HEMI.
Salazar Painting and Pura Vida played to a 5-5 tie, as Pablo Salazar scored twice, Edgar Acevez, Raul Medina and Bladimir Velazquez had solo strikes for Salazar, while Juan Gonzalez scored a pair and Amara Gonzalez, Mekai Ashby, and Rafael Flores also found the net for Pura Vida.
Pantry & Latch outscored Bandidos FC 6-2, getting two goals from Mike Ingraham, and solo goals from Spencer Stuhldrener, Ben Stanley, Maggie Craymer and Renee Mitchelle. Bandidos got goals from CJ Daniels and Kyle Chamblin.
Finally, the much-improved Ediz Hook FC men and women gave Los Primos a go, falling 3-1 in their final match of the season. Alex Hawley scored for the U.S. Coast Guard club. The Los Primos goal scoring details were not available.
Gold medalist
TACOMA — Camryn Waggoner, a student at White Crane Martial Arts in Port Angeles, competed in the Twin Tigers taekwondo championships Saturday at Foss High School gymnasium in Tacoma.
Waggoner won gold in both board breaking and training forms in her divisions for high-colored belts ages 12-14.
She is a red belt in taekwondo, getting ready to test for black belt at the end of the summer. If she passes, she will be a junior black belt until she reaches the age of 15, then automatically will become an adult black belt.
For her breaking competition, she did a butterfly kick and a spin back ax kick. The first requires athletes to jump up and spin around a full circle in the air so their front foot returns to the front and breaks the board before they land.
The second kick requires athletes to turn away from the board and spin around so their foot goes up and comes down on the board at face level. Both require students to look away from the target and then find it quickly before kicking it.
For the forms competition, Waggoner performed Taeguek Pal-jang, the last of the color belt forms that must be perfected before the black belt forms. She has trained at White Crane for three years.
Discovery Bay women
DISCOVERY BAY — Fourteen women gathered to play “Blind Nine” on June 1 at the Discovery Gay Golf Course.
Although 18 holes were played, only nine holes were counted for the competition. Playing a good game on every hole is important because players don’t know which nine holes will be drawn by the course pro for competition.
The “blind nine” are tabulated and half the player’s 18-hole handicap is deducted for a net score. Winners were Jodi Stone, first with a net 32; Diane Solie second with a 36.5; Jane Guiltinan third with 38.5 and Barb Aldrich fourth with a score of 39.5. Aldrich and Stone tied for low putts at 31.
On May 30th, the women at Port Townsend Golf Course played “Flags” this past week. Players must plant their flags on the course where their ball comes to rest when they have taken their allotted number of strokes. Thus, par plus handicap (35 + 15 HCP = 50).
Play can continue to finish the round, but the player is no longer in the competition unless she returns to the clubhouse still in possession of her flag. Aldrich and Lynn Bidlake each completed their nine-hole round with five strokes to spare, so they tied for first. Starla Audette came in second with two strokes to spare so took 2nd place. Both local women’s clubs enjoyed the Flags game in honor of Memorial Day.
Husky Stadium to host
RENTON — The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Executive Board approved Husky Stadium on the University of Washington campus to host all six state football championship games for the 2023 football season, the WIAA announced Tuesday.
The move will spread the championships over two days, Dec. 1-2, with three games occurring each day. The 1B, 1A and 3A classifications will play on Friday while the 2B, 2A and 4A classifications will play on Saturday. Individual game times will be finalized at a later date.
“We are thankful to the University of Washington Athletics leadership team for their continued support and allowing students to make lifelong memories at a world-class facility,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “We are hopeful that this format will provide a positive experience for the schools involved and will be embraced by the Washington football community.”
The venue and format were approved on a one-year trial basis, with plans to rebid and find a consistent home for the 2024-28 classification cycle.
