AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Forks boys, girls well-represented on All-Evergreen 1A League team

Spartans earn All-League hoops honors

FORKS — Six Forks Spartans boys and girls basketball players were selected to Evergreen 1A League all-league teams in voting conducted by league coaches.

Junior point guard Seth Johnson was the lone first-team all-league pick.

He was joined by junior teammates Cort Prose and Braton Armas, and senior Cole Baysinger.

Spartans head coach Rick Gooding earned co-coach of the year honors with Montesano’s Doug Galloway.

Montesano’s Trevor Ridgway was tapped as Evergreen League MVP.

Gooding said senior Scott Archibald earned Evergreen 1A League Academic All-League honors.

Archibald maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the season.

Sophomore forward Rian Peters and freshman post Chloe Leverington were second-team all-league selections for the Forks girls.

Elma’s Molly Johnston was picked as league MVP and her coach Lisa Johnson was voted coach of the year.

Forks girls basketball coach David Hurn said four Spartans earned Evergreen 1A League Academic All-League honors.

Seniors Sage Baar and Amber Hoagland and sophomores Jayden Olson and Peters earned cumulative GPA’s of 3.5 or higher. Freshman players are not eligible for this honor.

Wilder baseball tryouts

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Baseball will hold tryouts for its AA (age 17 and younger) and AAA (19 and younger) summer ball teams Sunday.

The tryouts will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Peninsula College and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at a hitting facility in Port Angeles (directions will be provided at the morning session).

The two teams will compete in Washington American Legion AA and AAA leagues and will play in various tournaments throughout the summer.

First pitch banquet

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders baseball team will kick off the 2018 season with a First Pitch Banquet Auction fundraiser Saturday, March 10.

It will be held at the Chesnut Cottage Restaurant, 929 E. Front St., at 6:30 p.m.

The evening will include a chance to meet the Riders, a spaghetti dinner, raffle giveaways and a chance to bid on silent auction items.

The price is $20 per person with all proceeds support the Port Angeles High School baseball program.
