JOYCE — Crescent senior Conner Ferro-May signed a letter of intent last week to join the track and field team for Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.
As a junior, Ferro-May finished eighth at state in the shot put and sixth in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, 1 inch.
Ferro-May was on track to place higher at the state track meet this year, but was injured at the North Olympic League championships and could not compete at state. He had a discus throw of 133-3 this season, which was the third-best at the 1B level this year. He won the NOL championship in the discus and won the event four times, all with distances of more than 126 feet.
In the shot put, he was third at the NOL championships with a distance of 39-1, better than this 2022 state meet distance. He finished in the top three of the shot put in five meets this year with his best distance of the year at 39-4.
Discovery Bay women
DISCOVERY BAY — In golf, the saying “Drive for show and putt for dough” couldn’t have been more true than in last week’s Discovery Bay Women’s Club competition.
Twelve women competed for prize money by demonstrating their putting skill. Regulation putting for an 18 hole round is 36 or not more than two putts per green.
In first place was Cindy Breed with 31 putts and tied for second place with 32 putts were Barb Aldrich, Jane Guiltinan and Sherilyn Ulland. Warming weather has created fairways with a lot of roll so lower scores are posted more often, but the demands on the greens still require that special skill of reading the putt and executing with the correct speed.
Bodystrong Taekwondo
LA CENTER — Sequim’s Bodystrong Taekwondo Academy entered 15 students in the 2023 Pacific Northwest Taekwondo tournament late last month, with 14 of them earning medals.
Annabelle Vadnais, 12, earned the junior grand champion award due to her high scores in three individual events. More than 100 athletes competed in the tournament.
Anglers meet tonight
SEQUIM — Current and future operations of Port of Port Angeles marinas and ramps in Port Angeles and Sequim will be discussed at tonight’s meeting of the North Olympic Peninsula chapter of Puget Sound Anglers.
The meeting will be held at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, with doors at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starting at 7 p.m.
Port of Port Angeles Commissioner Colleen McAleer will be one of the presenters, and the Anglers’ have invited the city of Port Angeles to discuss issues at the Ediz Hook boat launch.
A short business meeting, current fishing reports and raffle drawings will follow the discussion.
