AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Fee-free day Wednesday in state and national parks

Pool plans cardboard boat races for 18 and younger

PORT ANGELES — Today is the 105th birthday of the National Park Service and the occasion will be celebrated with free admission to state park and Department of Natural Resources land and all national parks, including Olympic National Park.

Fee-free days apply to day-use only, not overnight stays or rented facilities.

The next fee-free day in state and national parks is Sept. 25 in recognition of National Public Lands Day.

Cardboard boat races

PORT ANGELES — Cardboard boat races are planned for those 18 and younger at Shore Aquatic Center, 225 E. Fifth St., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday

Two-person teams will have an hour to build a boat using cardboard and duct tape that will need to float the length of the facility’s lap pool.

Construction will run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the races going from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Those 11 and younger will need an adult to assist and be in the water during the races.

The cost is $10, and registration ends at 9 p.m. Thursday.

To register, phone 360-775-2119.
