DISCOVERY BAY — Sunshine and warmer spring weather greeted the women of Discovery Bay for their regular Thursday play.
Spring also means important course work is underway. Due to the maintenance, punching and sanding of greens on the back nine, the women decided to play a front nine-hole competition this week.
Elite Eight allowed each player to toss out one hole of her choice before figuring the net score. With this allowed edge, the competition tightened. First-place winner was Cindy Breed, with Barb Aldrich taking a close second. Even closer was a tie for third shared by Jane Guiltinan, Roberta Krause and Lynn Pierle. Tied for fewest number of putts for the round were Cindy Breed and Lynn Pierle.
With a nine-hole competition, play concluded early and the ladies enjoyed a Port Townsend lunch in town. The course and the greens are shaping up beautifully for the anticipated “Beat the Pro” annual competition, which will take place on May 11.
Junior Babe Ruth
PORT ANGELES — Local 155 beat Westport Saturday afternoon 12-6 in Olympic Junior Babe Ruth play at Volunteer Park in Port Angeles.
Local 155 plated six runs in the first two innings, fueled by hits from Bryce DeLeon, Ian Smithson, Brandt Perry and Chris Jaynes.
Local 155 tacked on to the score in the third with a hit and run scored by Jaron Tolliver. They added three runs in the fourth with one run scored each by Smithson, Perry and Carson Waddell and tacked on two more in the sixth when Jaynes reached first base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Waddell, who later stole home.
DeLeon got the win on the mound for Local 155, going four innings, giving up two earned runs and scattering three hits. He logged seven strikeouts. Waddell came in to pitch relief, tossing two innings with two strikeouts. He gave way to Smithson to close the game, holding Westport to zero runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Local 155 pitchers gave up zero walks and totaled nine strikeouts.
At the plate, DeLeon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Smithson was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and Perry was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Waddell 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Westport had nine hits, led by Lane Wilson with two hits and two runs scored. Lincoln Bear had a hit and two runs scored.
