Bruins’ Wonderly tabbed as NOL Volleyball MVP

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Bay junior Miriam Wonderly was voted Class 1B North Olympic League Volleyball MVP in voting by league coaches.

Defensive MVP honors went to Crescent’s Grace Baillargeon.

Neah Bay head coach Rebekah Monette was tabbed Coach of the Year.

Wonderly and Baillargeon headlined first-team selections for the four-school league.

Hannah Olson of Clallam Bay also made the first team.

Neah Bay’s Jaclyn Parker and Grace Buzzell were first-team picks.

The Red Devils’ Alicia Loomis, Cei’J Gagnon and Kayla Winck were voted to the second team along with Clallam Bay’s Kendra Anderson and Tierra Hess.

Wheeler starts strong

COUER D’ALENE, Idaho — Port Angeles’ Nizhoni Wheeler made her presence felt in her first action for the Lower Columbia College Red Devils this past weekend.

In Wheeler and Lower Columbia’s first game, the freshman scored 21 points on 7 of 8 shooting, including hitting 3 of 3 3-point tries, and grabbed six rebounds in a 96-63 blowout of University of British Columbia-Okanagan.

Wheeler had 11 points in a 69-61 loss to Bellevue last Saturday.

The Devils made it a winning trip as they beat Southwestern Oregon 92-84 on Sunday.

Lower Columbia was down 46-42 at the half but turned it on in the second half to win going away. Wheeler had 16 points and eight rebounds on 8 of 9 shooting from the floor.

Wheeler, last season’s Peninsula Daily News All-Peninsula Softball MVP, also will play softball for Lower Columbia this spring.

Turkey Trot slated

PORT ANGELES — Registration is underway for the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K and 10K races.

The events will begin at the Morse Creek Trailhead at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday.

Fees are $20 for single entries for the 5K and $25 for the 10K and $40 for families up to six people until 6 p.m. today.

Late registration adds $5 to each fee and ends at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Day of registration also is available.
