PORT ANGELES — The USA BMX DK Northwest Gold Cup Finals, held on Sept. 16-18 was a huge success for the Port Angeles community according to local and national organizations.
Nearly 8,500 people from 11 different states attended the three-day event hosted by the Lincoln Park BMX Association and the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department.
USA BMX expressed its gratitude toward the Port Angeles community that opened its arms to riders from out of town with countless welcome signs and a large spectator turnout.
“We would also like to thank the Lincoln Park BMX and USA BMX crews for their amazing efforts throughout the weekend event,” stated a press release from the organization.
“The track crew and USA BMX crew were spot on. This track doesn’t climb the ranks of USA BMX without an amazing group to work every job,” said track operator Sean Coleman. “Glamorous or dirty — they get it done. We know people travel a long way to get here, whether it be for a practice or a large race, and our crew works to make sure everyone has a great time and wants to come back. Thank you to our hard-working guys and gals.”
“Port Angeles thrives on events like the Gold Cup, and it is thanks to our active community that we are able to host such exciting and fun events,” said Parks and Rec representative Carter Droz. “It takes a lot of time and dedication to make these events successful, and we are fortunate enough to have people who rise to the occasion to make it happen. I am overjoyed that our small city has become such a staple of the Northwest, and I look forward to watching it continue to grow.”
Soccer league
PORT ANGELES – Windermere and Forks FC improved to 4-0 with wins Sunday in the Peninsula Soccer League.
Windermere shut out High Energy Metals 3-0, getting two goals from Evan Swenson and one from Josh Heckenlively.
Forks FC eked out a 4-3 win over Salazar Painting, with two goals by Hugo Sandoval, and goals from Hugo Sandoval Jr. and Otoniel Flores Jr. The Salazar Painting club got a pair of goals by Pablo Salazar and one from Raul Medina. Jose Vladimi contributed an assist.
Strait Slice improved to 2-2 with a 2-1 nod over Los Primos. The pizza men got goals from Jimmy Quigley and Jay Marazon and Los Primos’ goal came from Benito Morales.
In Sunday’s other match, Pura Vida recorded its first win with a 3-1 triumph over Pantry and Latch. Alex Lopez scored a hat trick for the winners and Mike Ingram had the lone tally for Pantry.
Future Riders
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Future Riders C Team Green won 44-14 over the East Jefferson Rivals at Civic Field on Sunday with Blake Botero scoring five touchdowns. The team was also led by Trust Christianson and Karter Derma had a touchdown. Nate Hirst Jr. had three sacks and five tackles for a loss.
