AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Big Quilcene River clean-up Thursday; Mitch Black Memorial Golf Tournament coming up at Port Ludlow

QUILCENE — A community clean-up of The Big Quilcene River watershed is planned today.

The river provides drinking water for much of Jefferson County including Port Townsend.

The watershed clean-up event will start at 9:30 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the Hood Canal Ranger District, 295142 U.S. Highway 101 in Quilcene, and travel to clean-up sites on Forest Service Road 27.

Gloves, trash bags and other materials will be provided. Organizers said the event is suitable for all ages, and travel to the clean-up locations will require easy to moderate hiking abilities.

Golf tourney

PORT LUDLOW — Port Ludlow Golf Club will host the second annual Mitch Black Charity Golf Tournament on Sept. 19.

Black was a longtime Chimacum High School teacher and founder and coach of the high school golf program for 35-plus years. He died in May 2020, and a scholarship fund was set up in his name by Friends of Chimacum Schools, the hosts of the tournament.

“Last year was an overwhelming success, and we are hoping this year will far exceed those numbers,” said Marianne Walters of Friends of Chimacum Schools.

Funds raised at the initial event provided three $1,000 scholarships for Chimacum students and $1,000 in educator grants for Chimacum teachers.

This year, the event has an added goal of raising funds for the Chimacum High School golf program.

The four-person scramble will have a $400 entry fee per team, which includes green fees, cart use, lunch by the Dusty Green Cafe and on-course competitions.

Tee times will begin at 10 a.m.

Golfers also can purchase mulligans for $5 at check-in.

To register, call Port Ludlow at 360-437-0272 or email assistant pro Adam Barrows at abarrows@portludlow resort.net.

For more information on the event, email Jesse Best at jesse@cbbesthomes.com or Marianne Walters at pjandmariwalters@outlook.com.

Donations also can be made directly to The Mitch Black Memorial Scholarship Fund at www.focsef.org.
