Big Hurt team registration party planned
PORT ANGELES — There is still time to register a Big Hurt team for the multi-sport event set for Saturday, Sept. 24.
The Big Hurt consists of four legs – mountain bike, kayak, road bike and run.
Athletes can do all four legs solo in the Iron Division, or form a relay team of up to four participants.
A registration party for those interested in being on a Big Hurt team, or for teams needing to find an athlete, will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Harbinger Winery, 2358 W. U.S. Highway 101.
Ff you have a team already, this is a good time to meet up, register if needed and hold a team meeting.
Event organizers will be on hand to answer questions.
Those interested in the Big Hurt also can skip the party and register at tinyurl.com/PDN-BigHurtTeam for teams, while individuals can sign up at tinyurl.com/PDN-BigHurtIronDivision.
Participants must register by Monday to receive T-shirts.
Sign up for soccer
PORT ANGELES — Registration is underway for an adult coed soccer league sponsored by the city of Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department and Peninsula College.
The league is open to men and women ages 18 and older.
The cost is $55 per player.
Games will be held at Peninsula College and the Shane Park fields.
The season begins for the week starting Sunday, Sept. 11.The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Players without a team can be placed on a “free agent” list by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at 360-417-4557.

Avalanche tryouts set next week
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Avalanche AAU girls basketball team will hold open tryouts at the Peninsula College gym from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7.
The tryouts are for an eighth-grade team, but are open to both seventh and eight-graders.

Sheedy medals
VANCOUVER, B.C. — Port Angeles High School track and field coach Bob Sheedy won a gold medal in the decathlon at the Americas Masters Games.
Sheedy scored 3,940 point in the two-day, ten-event competition.
Sheedy competed in the 100-meter sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 400 run on the first day. He finished the event by completing the 80 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500 on the second day.
A total of 10,000 athletes from more than 50 countries competed in the Games.
The regional championships are held every four years in between the World Masters Championship.
Snipe on podium
SHERIDAN, Wyo. — Ron Snipe, a retired teacher from Port Angeles, recently earned eight gold and four silver medals at the Wyoming Senior Olympics earlier this month.
Snipe participated in swimming, earning medals in the backstroke, breaststroke, free and butterfly events.
Snipe also earned six gold, five silver and one bronze in the Washington Senior Games in Olympia in July.
He has qualified for the 2017 State Games of America in Grand Rapids, Mich.
